GP : F 4 Phantom Modification

I recently purchased a GP Phantom from someone.

Looking at the design later I was really dissapointed. The air intakes in the front are just too much drag creating.
I am thinkg of removing the black portion and making them like real air intakes. Further inside the fuse these intakes have a complete separte channel uptill the end. I am planning to cut out the rear engines as well and put out nozles there. This will not only reduce drag by letting the air to pass through but this will also provide artificial thrust to the aircraft.

Has anyone ever tried this before ?

How does this idea sound like ?

UBY.

I was planning on the same mod myself. There was another post with a beautifully built version that had open intakes. The owner has not flown it so no feedback available as to the success of this modification. He had fiberglassed and painted it. Do a search for F-4 in the forums and you might find it.

Think surface area guys. The air is going to hit a lot more surface area traveling through your model rather than bouncing off the fake intakes which are just a few square inches. I'm afraid you will be totally dissapointed with your results if you decide to do this. You will be flying an airplane that's got an internal drag chute. Everytime the air has to change directions to get through your model you are adding more drag.

Sean is correct.

If you want a more gentle flying bird (read less wing loading) build the outer wing panels with the supplied wood and do not cut them to fit the plans. You won't notice the difference and your .91 will pull it around just fine.
