WARBIRD KITS
 

Hello all,

I'm looking and having a hard time finding Warbird kits not Arf's. If you have any advise on how or where to do a search for an online hobby store, or if you have any links to a place that has mostly kits please post them here so I can check them out.

Mike,

Unless you are AN EXPERIENCED BUILDER, avoid the Stafford kits. My own experience with a Stafford kit had me re-engineering several areas of the plane. Check the Scale forum. There is another person that is not "overly thrilled" about them either.

SkyShark has a nice selection of warbirds, however, they are full kits and the majority of them are sheeted. If you want a nice plane without getting into retracts, check out their Aichi Vail.

BTW - How is your uncle/grandfather making out with the starter ?

Hi Mike,

I certainly agree with the advice to date. However, you didn't say what size you are looking for? There are some smaller manufacturers that make larger kits such as Apache in the UK www.apacheproducts.co.uk/ to name just one. There are also specialist "Kit Cutters" who will take plans from the likes of Ziroli et al and cut you as much of the kit as you want.

If this is your first foray into scale warbirds I would certainly go with the easier to build and fly kits like a Topflite AT6.

I'm building a Yak-3 from Red Star RC www.redstarrc.com. This laser kit has been a joy to build. Though they only have the Yak-3, they are just finishing a LaGG-3 which is in prototype. A definate if you looking for something a little different to talk to the field and show off to the 10 or so Mustang owners!

You might also check out Wing Mfg. They have quite a line of Warbirds, both full kits and short kits.

I don't know what it would cost to ship them here from UK, but these kits really have me intrigued:

Like Skyshark and Red Star, they emphasize flying qualities and lightness. They have a terrific selection and the models look pretty close to scale (I think most of the Wing Mfg kits do not). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a U.S. supplier.

Some people really like the Top Flite kits, but I get the impression those folks don't mind fast, heavy planes. I watched an 11 lb TF Spitfire destruct on its first flight and knew exactly what I did NOT want in a warbird. A Hurricane of the same size from Warbirds is supposed to weigh 7 lbs with retracts and is designed for half the power most people use on a TF kit. The Skyshark and Red Star kits also have light wing loadings and look very good.
