Foam Core Wings
 

I have started a Sig King Kobra with foam core wings.

Can I cover the wings with standard Ultracote or do I need to use a special covering?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Generally, regular monocoat requires too much heat to apply directly to foam.

Tower coat or econo coat can be applied directly to foam.

However, the plane was designed with the intention of the wings being covered with 1/16" balsa and the regular monocoat applied over the balsa.

once you sheet the cores with 1/16 balsa you can use ultra cote- monokote or whatever else with no problems.

Yes the cores are sheeted so I will use Ultracote.

I am really looking forward to flying this airplane.

how are you going to apply the sheeting? There are lots of good ways. I can give you a couple ideas of easy ways if you need them. PM me if you want.

Yea, you can use just about any covering in the 1/16 inch wood over faom, just watch your heat and don't leave a bunch of heat in one place too long.

Just about to start working on my KK.
Still trying to decide best adhesive for wing sheeting . Some suggest epoxy and others Aliphatic resin (carpenter's glue).
I'll appreciate any advise on the matter.

Hi Flyboy. I've also got a KK and a Giant Stinger. I'm very curious as to your method of sheeting foam wings. I've had the Kobra and the Stinger a few years. I just thinned out my hanger! Crashes of Planes that had there last flight and wore some important parts out. Not to mention Pilot E#$%& we don't mention that.

I used Sig Core Bond, it worked great. Recently I tried the Dave Brown Sorghum with slightly less results. I have heard that people use gorilla Glue, (plyurethane glue). They swear it works great. I haven't tried it yet.

I use Monokote. Just feep the iron moving. If you hold a piece of 1/16 in your hand and touch a hot iron to the other side, you will realize that the balsa has remarkable insulating characteristics. But you can still feel some heat if you hold it there to long.
