RE: CG Ultimate or GP Super Skybolt?
I ran a 16 inch prop but as you know, it didn't leave me much ground clearance,,, but it worked. You've just got to work on making those landings smoooooth! I'm going to try a 14 inch prop with my ASP 1.08. A guy I work with has a Saito 1.50 with a Slimline smoke muffler for sale. I'm awfully tempted to buy them. I'll have to see how the ASP works.
Jay Mc ORIGINAL: Deadeye Jay, what size prop were you swinging with 1.50? I'm only curious because with my 120 and a 15" prop, I only have about 2 inches of ground clearance. Is there taller gear available for this plane? |

I'm sure your Ultimate flies great but I have to believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For some reason, I still think the Ultimate is about the ugliest biplane ever made,,,a close second was the Staggerwing Beech.

Oly, you can order custom gear from www.TNTlandinggear.com
Another option is to run a 3-blade prop. |

FlyingPilgrim,
Thanks for the info on landing gear/prop clearance issue. I would like to balance all the issues on power to weight, great vertical performance, wing loading (not too high), etc. Lots of things to consider when getting a four stroke that will have great power, easy handling, low weight and will run well on low (15%) nitro. Others: I don't think the Ultimate is a bad looking plane, just that I prefer the rounder look of the Skybolt. Performance will trump looks, for me, and if the Ultimate performs better, I lean toward that. The Beech Staggerwing is the one of the best looking airplanes ever made! Not my opinion, just fact! ;) |

I love the Ultimates... I tend to do a little more mods then most people do on the CG Ultimates. and I love them so much i came out with my own. I also think that the GP skybolt is a great flyer as long as there is some mods done to it aswell. I've owned may of both and think they both have their strong points and bads...I also think you can never have to much POWER :D
edit: almost forgot a couple pics.;) |
RE: CG Ultimate or GP Super Skybolt?
I almost went with the Skybolt because of the quality issues I've heard about Goldberg. I decided to take a chance and order the Ultimate from Tower since I can return it if it looks like junk. I opened the box up and was completely surprised by a mostly laser cut kit with beautiful wood. I say Goldberg is right on par with SIG, atleast with the kit I have. CG seriously needs to update their manual and the information on this plane. I was expecting in another person's words "die crushed" but it's a very nice kit. Maybe it's laser cut too now but GP leads me to believe the Skybolt is die cut. And as everyone says I believe the Ultimate will be a better flyer than the Skybolt. I want to try an O.S. 120FS for this plane.
