First Full Kit?
 

Hey Guys,

I've been hanging out here for a while... I've been flying 2 years and fly 3D... But I have yet to build a full Kit... I have built a GP extra 60 wing for a buddy, and a Profile P-51 C/l for that same buddy.. But like I said no full kit... There's Basically 2 ways I'd like to go with this... And I haven't even decided for sure that I'm going to build the kit now or what not but just reasearching into it..

I'd Like A:

1.) 1.20+ Edge 540 Or Giles 202/300 Or other Aerobatic Planes (Yaks etc) but no Extra's Please.

2.) Piper Cub... Larger Scale 80+ Inch Span

3.) A Nice Scale Warbird, Bf 109, Focke Wulf etc.. I like German Birds but that's not a "Must Have"

4.) A Scale General Aviaion Plane... Cessnas, Pipers, Beechcraft, etc..

I know sound like pretty much everything.. But on this one I want something that not everyone else has ( I know everyone and there mother has or has had a Piper Cub) But I'm going to go with a more unusual color scheme ect.. I'd really Like the warbird. But which one? I like the Skyshark R/c Me 109 (or Bf 109 whichever they market it as) But I haven't heard much about it..

Actually Skyshark Has lotz of nice kits... 2 Me 109's (E and G) Along with 2 Focke Wulfs Nice Avenger.. I like how most all of their planes look... But what about the build and quality of wood? I like that Christian Eagle as well... Hmmm So many choices.. But if the feedback is good I think one of their kits will be my first.;)

Check the warbirds forum for Skyshark comments.
From what I've read they're top-notch and make real quality products.
If this is your first kit, I'd go for the Skyshark Fantasy, it resembles the SIG 4*60 and will be an easy build and learn you some basic techniques.

I buit a SIG 4*60 as my first kit and it's not hard at all, goes together very easy and you frame it up in a few evenings.

My advice is that you first build a SIG/GreatPlanes/Skyshark sportflier to get the hang of building before progressing to a nice warbird or larger scale aircraft.

Might look at the Balsa USA 1/4 scale cub. Would be a good one and not too hard of an early stage builder. I have a giant royal cub, but it is going to be a lot harder to build.

I would recommend a sport kit for your first build. Scale kits are a bit more difficult to build. I think that is why you see so many darn Cubs. It is scale, but a fairly easy to build scale model.

I just built a Goldberg Chipmunk a few months ago. I certainly got the impression that it was a beginners kit. It isn't completely scale. The sides are flat and so is the belly. There is a rounded turtle deck on top and the over all effect is presentable without being a pain in the neck to build. A kit like that is very rewarding to build without demanding too much from your first experience.

I must admit I have been at this hobby for a long time and I have my own collection of kits. I'm really not that familiar with most of the kits on the market now. But names like Goldberg and Sig have been around for ever and their reputations are sterling.

Someone posted a link to Joe Bridi kits. I for one, am thrilled they are still in production. Those kits were the power flyers of the late 70's and into the 80's. The Kaos is a legend, and yet simple and easy to build. It has the proportions of a pattern ship and that is pretty much how it flys. That would be a great first kit. Simple and straight forward, and yet a great plane to fly and an old school legend to boot. I'll stop there.

I thought about going with a "sport" kit.. But I'm looking for a challenge and I think I could build a more advanced kit.. This will be a winter project. I'm really liking Skysharks Bf-109G[8D]

Never built a kit before. Welcome to model building. I would start out with a sport 0.40~0.60 model. Best to start this in the winter. Off flying season.
