Almost finished with my GP Extra 300

Here it is... about 75% done. Just firewall/landing gear holes, fuel tank and final sanding. this is about 3 months of work a few hours a day. Don't mind the flowers and pink, it's my sister's room

Notes:
GP Extra 300 .46 size
Moved rudder servo to the back for strength, planning to put a saito 91 in it so CG won't be too hard to adjust
Also added 1/2 inch to the rudder, was going to modify elevators but the manual said that the stock ones are plenty
Had to shape the turtle neck myself by sanding which takes alot of time, but really rewarding in the end
Plane weighs about 3 pounds without engine, but with all radio equipment in.
Accidently glued hinges for ailerons before covering so that's going to be fun huh
Rear horizontal stab is off, one side higher than the other by 1/16 of an inch... I'm pretty bothered by it, but epoxy is pretty strong

I was going to cover with patty wagstaff's scheme but this is one of those planes that's capable of so many paint schemes... If you have a nice extra please post it so i can get some ideas

Thanks for checkin it out

Very nice work... they fly as good as they look too. I built 2 of them a few years back. If you haven't done it... I recomend "flying-wires" on the rear stabs(hor. and vert.). I lost the first one due to flutter of the rear horizontal stab. The only thing I can figure is that I did the same your doing in putting a .91four-stroke in mine.. which does create a bit more vibes then smaller engines.... and they are decently fast plane for having a larger frontal area. Sullivan makes a real nice kit I put on Extra#2..... which is still with me after 3yrs.... and flies great. I used these smaller planes to move up to larger scale Extra's, and it was a successful transition... it was just a few steps up to my 27%scale Extra..
The first pic(red/white) is the GreatPlanes(same as yours)... the second pic(which I included just for a scheme idea for you.. is the Midwest 27% Extra....

RE: Almost finished with my GP Extra 300

Thanks for the tips... Nice planes on both... The extra is a beautiful plane, hope to get it up and running soon

I do have a few questions for ya if you don't mind
with that 91, how was your CG?
the surfaces are really small, is this plane pretty capable or what?
im sure 3D is out of the question but it should be able to do everything else right?
Any bad tendencies? Landing? Tracking on takeoff?

Any information would be great, i've always wanted to fly an extra, but have heard a lot of stories of how much of a handful they are... but i figure it can't be much harder than a funtana... which i've flown in the past...

Thanks buddy

Hey there.. I'm building my second kit of one of these... Watch the weight... it likes to snap with too much elevator... they are abit of a handful at first, I went with this plane after 2 weeks of flying an Avistar (Self taught, first airplane) and I flew mine without incident for 250 or more flights, untill the aieleron servo stripped in flight. It's smoother than a Funtana, I own both the 40 and 90 F-tanas. please, mod your wing for 2 aieleron servos! I'm doing that on my second one.

Hey, I was going to do that but it will ad weight, instead i'm putting a high torque metal gear servo for aileron... Very concious about that... Thank you. It's reassuring that these are smoother than the funtanas.. I'm gonna have to fly it with a .46 for now due to lack of funds, but will eventually upgrade. If anything it'lll give me time to get use to the plane before a throw in a monster to power it...

I don't know if thats such a good idea or not, I had a .61 in mine and it was marginal power, hang at full throttle.. a .46 might just get it in the air

You're probably right i've read posts on how much power this thing needs... i'm gonna hold off on it until i can get an engine... in the mean time i'll just throw the fx into my somethin' extra

If you can wait a little more, 91fx would be just right
