What kit is this ?
 

It looks like a Lazer kit . Had black with yellow stripes. Getting a new covering and engine.
Wingspan: 87"
Length: 64"
Had a Brison 2.4 on the business end.
Wings: Sheeted foam core
Weight: Heavy
If it is a Lazer , which kit is it ?

I would say it is definately a Laser, but not sure of the brand yet. Still doing some research. I do know that the one you have is bigger then the Lanier 1/4 scale laser, and smaller then the 1/3 scale. So not real sure about it being a Lanier. I will have to do some hunting.

Sure looks like it but this one is an older kit I believe. Plus it's 64" and that Kangke you found is 70" in length. And the Kangke is an ARF not a kit.

For the life of me I can't remember, but I was sure thinking that I have seen a Laser ARF made by someone that was done in Black in Yellow. Maybe I am thinking of something else I saw. I will have to do some more researching here. It could very well have been built from Plans. I will also check the AMA and the RCM plans archives and see if I can find anything out.

I found what was throwing me off. It was not the Lanier Laser Kit that I remember being advertised in Black and yellow, but it was the Lanier Stinger 40 kit that is pictured as Yellow and black. Now that I got that out of my head, it will make my research easier. Here is the kit that had me confused that I thought was a Laser, but indeed was a Stinger. My memmory not so good I guess.

Ray,,, I see what you mean. That Stinger is a close cousin in looks for sure.
This plane had a black base covering with yellow stripes/markings. Wish I would have gotten a pic of it before my buddy de-covered it. I thought I'd add a couple more clues for you on this brain buster. I am totally without a clue.

The ailerons are unlike any I've seen before. But that's nothing new. I've only been in this hobby a few years now.
They are a plastic or nylon flat style with cotter pin like hinges. The hinge area itself are installed into the L&T edge by tiny dowel rod pegs. They are all flawlessly done. Must have taken gobs of time to do this work. Or at least it would have me.

The entire top half of the fuse is solid balsa. Shaped and molded from the turtledeck to the tail. And the underside is reinforced with a double layer of wood between the formers.

My friend is going to recover it, but we sure would like to know what brand kit this was. If you need any additional photos that might help you find this bird just let me know. I've been doing searches till my eyes bleed and no joy yet.

If memory serves, AeroPro had an 87" Laser ARC. I'd have to check my info as I think that's what I have in the attic. I'll see if I can pull the paperwork.

The Aeropro has the same wingspan, but much longer fuse then what sturtz has.

That sure looks like it. I'm on the phone now getting a second measurement of the length.
That would explain all the servo wiring zip tied inside prior to covering.

Nope,,,[:o] still 64" from the end of the rudder to the tip of the cowling. Even if you added a big box mount, engine and spinner it would still be shy of the 78 inch length discribed in the link you posted.
But again, it sure looks like a match.

I am now thinking it may be the Aeropro, and either your Plane has been shortened at some point, or the aeropro design changed at some point. They may have found that a longer tail moment handles better on the ground, and compared to all the Lasers I have now looked at.....64" seems fairly short for a laser with a 87" wing span. What leads me to now believe it to be the aeropro is the, not one, but two servos in the tail. This quote from the review I posted was a clue for me. The autor writes "The control surfaces were connected to servos in the tail section for the elevator and rudder." Im not positive, but I don't believe the others use both servos in the tail. The custom covering job on your Plane would also fit the bill, since the Aeropro is not an ARF, but is a ARC(almost ready to cover) It also states that the surfaces are not hinged, and require you to do your own hinging. This would explain the pinned hinges that your Plane has. The trick of using small dowels trough the trailing edge to help secure the hinges is a common practice to help prevent a hinge from ripping out in the event of some flutter. I used pinned hinges in alot of my kits, and I actually use small screws instead of dowels to secure my hinges. I will continue to investigate until I found out for certain though.

Thanks for all the effort and good investigational help Ray. I see now why the cotter pin type connectors were used to connect the hinges.
