4*120 Build Thread

You guys wanna see me build a 4*120 kit?

Engine is going to be a Ryobi 31cc conversion.

Thinking about covering it in fabric. I haven't ever used fabric before--so if I go that route, it will be interesting.

Thinking about making a 2-piece wing with aluminum tubes. My truck bed is only 73" long--so the 80" wing won't fit. It would be a lot of work, and I'm not sure if I'll do it or not. Seriously considering it.

I already know that I'll have to beef up the firewall and LG mount. I'm uncertain if I should strengthen the area on the fuse right behind the wing saddle. It'a a weak spot, and with this Ryobi engine up front, it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm open to ideas for cool modifications. If you guys have any suggestions, I'll be happy to listen.

What do ya think? Wanna see it or not?

Well, you told me to get one and you would too! Looks like you didnt wait on me! lol. I bought a 120 ARF and the guy cant ship it now so looks like Im back in the kit stage. Oh well, I think Its for the best.

#1 I want a balsa cowl like Mr70ss and damifino's, they make the plane look like its going 120 just sittin there.

#2 I REALLY want to tackle a build

#3 Even though I crashed last week (just needs a fuse) my Alpha 40 trainer is the only thing I got and since I dumb thumbed into the runway, I may need more stick time to get the feel of flying a larger plane. ( I came off 6 months on a SloV and got the GLow itch)

SO build away and make sure you have a big memory card to get me some pics!!!!!!! I also Read that a Ryobi 31cc is in order. I dont know If Im ready for gas but Ill still love the review and some pics of the build! If anyone can do it, you can!

Good Luck

And remember, weve seen a ton of 4* 60 builds but no 120 builds that lasted till the maiden

DO IT, forget about the POLL!

Get a kit and I'll take you through every step of the build. We're using different engines, but thats not a big deal.

I have a 46 size ARF on the bench right now--so it's gotta get finished before I can build this 4*120. But, it won't take me long to finish that ARF.

I'll be using a wing jig for my wing panels. It's not necessary for a nice straight wing--but I got it, might as well use it.

There are a few areas of the plane that generally need reinforcing. The Landing gear mount is weak, but beefing it up is no big deal. I'll need to strengthen my firewall to handle the weight and power of the Ryobi. Not a big deal. There is a spot behind the wing saddle that is kinda weak, and it's not a big deal to beef that up.

I gotta warn ya though--my work bench rarely looks as nice an organized as most of the ones you will see posted here. When I get going on a build--it's a frenzy and things get messy.[&:]

Whats a Work Bench?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Maybe by the time you get the ARF done, I will have mine, I have a new Digi cam and I will send you pics of my progress too. Remember though, I have 3 kids, full time job [:@] but my wife rules and it very good about letting me have my selfish time.

Now, where am I gonna get the dough for a SAY-TOW !!??!?!?!?!?!??! HAHAHAHAH!

ONE FIDDY THAT IS

woooooooooo

Alright!! You got a cam too.

We can both post. If you want we can both post and work together in one thread. I won't need help--but you might. And, if the other guys can see your progress--they can help you out.

I got 2 litte kids as well. 4yrs and 2yrs. I don't usually get to work on my planes untill after they are in bed. Sometimes my wife goes shopping and I get to be alone during the day---then I can build. But, mostly I have to build at night. I stay up LAAAAAAATE usually. Sometimes 2 or 3 in the morning.[X(]

You can build a Ryobi or Homelite conversion for the same price as the Saito--maybe less. It will be twice as fuel efficient as the Saito.

Myself and a lot of guys were scared to get their first gasser. It's not a big deal. It just runs on cheaper fuel and weighs a bit more. After I got my first gasser for a big plane--I was kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I was scared to get a gasser and I waited about 5 yrs before I got my first one. It's the only way to go for any plane with 1000sq.in. of wing or more.

I know that your new to the hobby. And it's intimidating to think about a gasser for your first kit and your first plane after getting your solo license. But they aren't hard to run and they aren't hard to tune either.

Think about it. Don't dismiss the gasser. I'm converting a Ryobi 31cc for $80. You can buy a brand new Ryobi weedeater from www.harborfreight.com for $50. Costs $9 to ship it. So you got $60 in the engine and $80 in the conversion parts. Thats $140 for a 31cc engine that will sip down 10oz of fuel in about 30 minutes. Thats 10oz of fuel that costs ya $3 per gallon for the gas and about $1 for the 2-stroke oil to mix it up. So, $4 a gallon for your fuel and you get TWICE the mileage per tank. Beats the heck out of $15 or $18 per gallon for glow fuel. A Saito 150 will suck down about 16 or 18 oz in 15 minutes. It's gonna cost ya $2.50 per flight--just for your fuel. You can fly the Ryobi for pennies.

If you want to dig around and buy a used Ryobi from the local small engine shop--you can get them cheap. So, your engine price will go down even more. Ya can't hardly wear one of these things out. As long as the cylinder and piston aren't cooked from running straight gas in it---your good to go. You can rebuild the carb for about $15.

Alright, lets get this party started. I'm off to snap pics of the box contents.[sm=lol.gif]

I'm considering the 4*120 as my next project (just began another one), so I'd definitely like to see a build thread.

CHEATH- Have you thought about rounding the corners of your tail feathers? Maybe 1" to 1 1/2" radius. Won't hurt flight performance one bit.......Take some black paper or tape and play around with blacking out what you could cut off the corners.

Damifino:
This thread is jusat a popll to get people reactions to a build thread.

If you need to ask questions of C_Heath, then the ACTUAL build thread is here:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3566766/tm.htm

Please post questions and replies to that thread. I want to keep all the info in one spot and not get this build stretched out in to 2 different threads.

Thanks
