Gluing the Canopy
Putting the finishing touches on a 4 * 60. I'm ready to glue the canopy. The instructions say to cut about 1/16 in of covering off, lay down some accelerant, and use medium CA. The accelerant is supposed to keep the glue from fogging the canopy. I was also looking at using a canopy glue which is supposed to remain somewhat flexible.
My questions are, Can I use the canopy glue directly on the ultracote? Should I use CA? Should I follow book exactly? I'm not crazy about cutting the covering because, even though I will use 1/4 black trim tape on the outside, I think you will be able to see the wood from looking through the canopy. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks. |
Gluing the Canopy
I would not use CA to glue your canopy on .... It will fog the canopy anyway. I use canopy glue and very small screws to install my canopies. I just run a thinbead all the way around, place the canopy in it's correct location and then put two or three screws on each side.
Hope this helps! |

Do you put the glue on top of the covering or remove a small strip of covering? |
Gluing the Canopy
I clean the covering REALLY good with acetone (CA remover) or alcohol. That seems to work fine for me. If it makes you feel any better you might try taking some fine sandpaper and roughing up the covering under the canopy.

Nah wait!
Use rc-560 canopy glue. It is almost the consistancy and feel of Elmers white glue. Makes an excellent bond without cutting anything.

Gluing Canopy
I like RC 56 and screws, sometimes just screws. Never again will I use CA.

Thanks
I think I will stay away from the CA. Thanks for the help everyone.

Gluing the Canopy
I read on here sometime ago that you could use "odorless" CA. I guess it not suppose to fog. But any I got some RC 56 that i'm going to use on my 4 Star 40 kit. I used it on my Something Extra ARF with great results. JT
