Celing tile(which kind?) or sheet rock on top?
 

heh folks, have a nice flat hollow core door as a work surface, started to build a kit last night, but the surface is too hard to use t-pins.

I have heard use ceiling tile, but need more clarification, what exactly is the name of the best ones? Also, is a tile better then sheet rock?


I know is alot of threads, did a search, but a huge amount of posts to go through and alot of it about workbench pics.

any standard accoustic ceiling tile. They are about 4'x3' and can be found at any Home Depot. They only cost about $2 and work great. Use the side with the paper on it.

Drywall work fine also. It is a little harder to push the pins in though.

I used sheet rock for my building projects. Cwat212 is right that sometiimes the pins are a little hard to get in. I used a pair of needle-nose pliers to set mine, and man do they hold their position.

needle nose is good idea too.

Thanks folks, got what I was looking for. On a side note, not impressed with great planes J3 Cub 60 size so far, parts come out of their sheets poorly and do not match up very well. Oh well, is a learning project anyway.

A lot of that is due to the fact that it is a very old kit (IE been on the market for a while) which means that the dies that cut the wood are getting dull.

You might consider "Homasote" for a building surface.
It is compressed recycled newsprint and comes in 4x8 sheets.
Easily cut to any size you may need. It works very well.

Sanding the uncut side of the sheet containing the die cut parts a little more than normal can make it easier to get them separated from the sheet in one piece.

I use 2 inch thick pink foam boards they are 8 by 24 work great for about 4 planes then I replace cost about $8 at Home Deopt
