HELP!! Kaos wing.

All,

I'm building a Killer Kaos. I'm to the point on the first wing panel whre it sez "Add the shear webs." OK, but the plans don't show which bays the the shear webs go into. Where do the webs start and where do they stop?

Thanks,

CR

I don't have a Killer Kaos kit, but I have built many aircraft. Have a Kaos 40 right now.

Sheer webs add so little weight and so much strength that it makes sense to put them in every rib bay. Cut them to fit exactly between the spars (make an "I" beam) and to butt up against each rib. Glue all around. The wood grain should be vertical. 1/8" sheet balsa is plenty for this application. I've used this method in hi-start sailplanes and have never folded a wing. I add them to all planes whether the plans call for them or not. Cheap insurance! It's a little work, but well worth the effort.

The above post is almost correct, the shear webs need to be bonded to the upper and lower spars. Contacting the ribs is not as important as keeping the upper and lower spars from flexing. Carry the shear webs out at least three ribs from the tip. It makes little sense to carry them out all the way to the tip, as there is little to no shear force applied there. Grain needs to run perpendicular to the spars, as indicated above.

Ditto what Vince said. Just one other note... Check how the two wing panels are joined. Sometimes you need to leave out the first 1 or 2 webs to allow for the wing joiner.

Funny about that. There isn't a wing joiner on the plans, nor any material provided in the kit for same. I'm thinking of putting one in, JIC. OTOH, I've never heard of a Kaos wing folding on anyone.

Shear web everything except the last rib bay. Don't sweat the web to rib joint. Wrap the center with at least 4" of fiberglass. Go fly, have fun. Bridi designs are the epitome of the KISS principle.
