Priming an engine
Hey guys, I have a Great Planes Extra 300 with an O.S. 46 FX on it. I was just wondering how do most people prime the engine? I cannot get my finger in the cowl to cover up the carb. Thanks!!

RE: Priming an engine
Block the exhaust with you finger. That will pressurize the fuel tank and push fuel up to the carb.

If it isn't, it should be.

What Jim and John said.

I do it the other way. I put my finger over the carb, with the throttle wide open, and turn the prop over a couple of times, with the glow plug unplugged.

I had that plane. A different motor though. I would just open the carb to full throttle, and spin with my starter until I heard the motor start to spin more freely (the lube in the fuel was there at that point). Then close down throttle, connect glow, and it would fire up.

All of the above work. You can also shoot a little cigarette lighter fluid into the carb and the engine will kick right off, especially in cold weather. (Or at least what we call cold weather out here in the desert!)
