Sig Smith Mini Plane

A friend gave me a smith mineplane and know that the incidence is important. 99 % of all the wood work is done. I am mounting the wings and building the n struts. he did not have any of the paper work so I could get the correct incidence. Does anyone know what the incidence is for this biplane.

Thanks

well, Got her almost ready for the air. I do not have a clue to what the CG is or the throws. Could someone be so kind to tell me the CG point and Throws.

Thanks

HI
good luck with this we had one in the club and went thru 3 flyers unsuccessfully. it was a terrible flyer. hope your luck is better.
think it finally ended up in trash can at field

from memory I think the cg is just in front of back wing mount screw on top wing.

good luck

the CG, it's right on the front of the leading edge of the bottom wing for first flight...then move it as suits your flying style. Set the throws per plan 1/2" aileron, 5/8" elevator. Very stable on the ground, rolls are very slow. Lands like a dream. Enjoy

i find that strangely odd.....we have one that flies at our field and it flies great. it's one of the "bipes" that flies when none of the others will

I ordered the Smith from my LHS today!! Now the bit-chomping begins.....:D

I'm gonna definitely convert to 4 ailerons.

Does anyone out there have a copy of Higley's "Bipes" book? I'll buy it.

RE: Sig Smith Mini Plane

Well took her out today and did a long take off. she went up but banked hard to the left. I just brought her down safely and have added some right to the motor and adjusted the Al. throws. The kit was very old and in great shape. The wings where not straight, so lots of water and presure made it mostly straight. I could tell at low speed she still was very controlable. I did go with a Diff. landing gear. I will report and take a photo if she makes it back to today. Going to try her again. I am sure it is a great flyer, I just hope I got the wing right after being so badly worped.

RE: Sig Smith Mini Plane

You may want to ask him in an email or PM, his thread was 5 years ago so he may not lurk any longer? My smith was a bear on the ground but once off the ground it was a good little plane. Another club member made up his own LG with shocks and toe in, his had much better ground handling then mine.To get the correct CG I had to use a four stroke or I would have needed to use a lot of lead.
As I recall the story of the Smith, there was one full scale built and SIG bought it and just copied it to make the kit. Been a long time sense I read up on the plane so I may be wrong about that but I think not??
