What do you guys think about upscaling the "buttercup" kit that came out in the newest AMA magazine. to be powered by a conversion weedie engine? what wingspan would it be? how do i go about upsizing and figuring out the specs? any help would be great,

ok so no one knows how to go about this? i mean i can go to a "kinkos" type place and blow up the plans, but what do i make the ribs from thick balsa? plywood? 2 piece wing ribs 1? anyone?

You don't seem to be getting any ideas here. You might try your proposal over in the "AERODYNAMICS" forum where scratch builders congregate. While I like the Buttercup and even remember the original article from years ago I don't think it would be that great of a design to upscale. You are going from a PeeWee .049 engine to a heavy weedeater engine? Maybe a 100 to 110 inch wing span? I could see maybe a 50 - 60 inch wing span with a .40 4 cycle?????

Actualy a .010 or .020 is plenty of motor the the little Buttercup. I built one and flew it with a TD.020 rudder/elevator no throttle and a Cannon super micro radio. This little plane would do rolls, loops and the neatist little Lamchevoc (SP) I have ever seen. Flew from a school parking lot and never landed more than a few feet away. Not so sure about scaling this up though as it would need a lot of engineering. Very stable little plane built per plans.

How is it comming on the size-up. In order to get an idea about what size parts material to use, you may want to get your hands on some manuals of similar planes in the size category you want to build the Buttercup to. This may give you an idea of what size the parts should be (ie. 1/4 balsa or 1/8 ply ribs with caps, spar size and so on). Maybe some of the lager Telemasters or even the Flyin' Kings may help. Just some ideas...... keep us posted if you begin to build and what you decide to try. It may be interesting to see if that design can hanlde such a large size. May take some work to get the details worked out to build it as such a large model which is safe!

I know this is very old, but I found this because I am considering building the original 1/4 A version. Also I did a search on Youtube and there was a giant scale Buttercup with about 110" wingspan. Was that cochinito77?
