PT-40 Wing modification with Flaps
This is my first posting,
I used to have a PT-40 that i flew for two years and then destroyed its wings (it was my first plane). Moved on to another trainer temporarily after not flying for 2 years (it is the Easy Fly 40). It is getting my confidence back to fly my scratch built Cloud Dancer 40. Soon ... really soon i will fly it. As for the PT-40 i did by a wing kit for it, but i would like to do some modifications to it. I want to add some flaps and increase the aileron effect. Also i was told by a friend not to completely remove the Dihedral Angle (I did start with B Dihedral .. the lower of the two options). My idea is to add flaps that are 1/8 of wing span on each side and are 1/8 of chord wide. As for the ailerons, I thought of making them 1/4 of wing span on the ends and 1/4 of chord for width. Th problem is that the aileron will stick out of the wing profile, and i don't wont to change the ribs of the wing to accommodate for the 1/4 of chord width of ailerons. Does any one have an input on that? Thanks |

Why would you want to add flaps to a PT-40. I have two of those planes and they do not need flaps at all.

RE: PT-40 Wing modification with Flaps
Just for the fun of it and to train my self on flaps. No real reason .... but thought it might make the landing more fun
I did fly it for a year and a half and I know it works great. |
RE: PT-40 Wing modification with Flaps
I agree with Manks. I have a PT-40 and it does not need flaps. What you can do is to use two aileron servos and use flaperons and increase their surface.
I have always considering build another wing with reduced dihedral to one inch. This is one side of the wing flat (0-degrees) and measuring the height of the other wing tip to the flat surface. I think the "B" dihedral is close or more than 2-inches. Also, you might want to modify the wing ribs and convert them to semi-symetrical instead of flat bottom. And finally, with the semi-symetric wings, reduce the incidence of the wing to cero degrees or +1. |
