1st kit suggestions.
 

Hi I have been flying for a while now, and I have not yet had the oprotunity to build a kit. I am looking for an easy to build first timer type kit. I have a .40 engine and a 4ch radio system to put in it. Although this will be my firt kit, my flying skills are more intermediate, so I dont want a trainer type plane. I have looked at the tower uproar, and the sig somethin extra. Would either of these be a good choice? I am also completly open to other kit recomendations preferably under $100.

The Sig Somethin' Extra get recommended a lot.
It's a good kit, I've built two of them myself... Very easy to build and good instructions.

Another Sig kit that's good is the 4*40, it's a very classic plane that many people have built.

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will get good support from this forum, there's many experienced builders here that'll help you along.

ps. Check your budget carefully, building tends to take more money than just for the kit.
You need iron on covering material, glues, hobby knifes and some other basig building supplies such as sandpaper and pins.

I have built A gang of Up-Roars but I think the 4*40 is A better all around plane. Nothing against the Roar though, they are both great but I think the 4* is maybe all around better as A stunt plane. JMHO

I gotta go with the 4*40. Easy to build first kit, a great flier IMHO.

On that .40 engine I guess the 4*40 is a better choice than the SSE.
Not that it wouldn't fly the SSE, but it's more "3D" orientated and should have lots of power to go crazy.
The 4*40 is more an allround airobatic sportplane and should fly great on a .40.

I'm building my first kit now. I choose the Venture 60. Althrough it does call for a 60 engine, the kit is very easy to build. I've only been working on it for 4 days now... and am half way through the build. The parts are very well milled and fit great. The directions are clear and easy to follow. I'm very happy with it so far. Bruce Tharpe has been more then helpful the few times I had a questions.

Hey thanks guys, I love the 4* and thats why I already have one (guess I should have mentioned that earlier):eek: The one I have is an ARF. So most of you think the 4* performs better than the uproar? Mabe I should look at a different style of airplane. I am looking for an intro to 3D type plane, becuase later on I plan to buy a sig 3D Mayhem. I think I may take a closer look at the SSE, but the only problem is, as mentioned earlier, the engine I have may not be enough.(.40 LA)

here is a kit from my local hobby store its called a GIZMO it flys easy a trainer on low rates and can do 3-D on high I modified mine with barn door ailerons (large rectangular) instead of tapered, and counter balanced rudder and elevator so I could goof around with it this plane rocks heres a pic .

It's a profile plane and should be light enough to fly well with your engine.

I have seen several Uproars, and have one almost ready to go, and they seem to be good planes. They are not really designed as 3d planes if that is what you're looking for.

Lanier Stinger 40.

THAT will teach you a LOT about building. Built up fuselage and tail. Foam wings that you don't really sheet comepletely, so it's a good way to get your feet wet with sheeting foam, but you don't have to be as precise as if you were actually sheeting the entire wing.

If your just doing this to learn how to build a kit, then I'd build a Stinger. They fly great and will slow down to a crawl for landings. Fully aerobatic. It will do every maneuver you can throw at it.

The Sig Fazer is a good choice I have had 2 of them and will be building a 3rd.Your os .40 will fly it ok that is the engine I had on my first one.although I do not fly 3-d I would think you would want a bigger engine to make it completely 3-d capable.IMHO If you are looking to go completely 3-d you will need another engine.

Here are a couple suggestions that would work well with your .40...

Lanier Dominator - This should be a fairly straigforward build and the plane is light enough that your .40 won't have any trouble hauling it around. Should be as easy to fly as your 4* but handle a little better and go a lot faster.

Sig Cub - This one would be a little more difficult to build but you will learn a lot in the process and end up with something worth looking at. It will also be a little harder to fly so it will teach you a few things there as well. They aren't necessarily difficult, just different than a common sport plane - a little harder to take off/land but flying is fairly straightforward.

I second the Cub, but clip the wings and you will be able to do a lot more aerobatics with it. This is a sport scale plane and has much more eye appeal over the others mentioned.;)

I have built and flow two Venture 60's. Your going to love how they fly. I put a Magnum FS 91 in both and I really like the performance. Not to much, just right. I do not fly fast but like a little horsepower when needed.

Which .40 engine do you have? Some are quite powerful and maybe the SSE would be okay. You can have fun without gobs of power on that kit! Depending on control rates, it can be a sweetheart or a raging bull.
