My vote would be for the 4*40 Great kit and great flyer too, To be honest I've not had one but one of my friends has and it was a nice kit, Also there are tons of mode to make it more aerobatic without making it less stable just do a search on it and tons will show up and in my opinion Sig makes one of the better kits for a new builder.

You can't go wrong with a 4*40 with a few easy mods. This was my second plane as well. A 4*40 with a Saito 56 engine is a perfect match. Shorten the wing by one rib on each side, sheet the turtle deck for a cleaner look trim the canopy a bit because the stock one looks dorky and you have an excellent second plane that is easy to fly and will do all basic aerobatic manuevers.

I don't see where the Something extra would be that much more difficult to build than the 4*.
As far a flying the 4* it's a great first low wing plane but loves to float when landing, will do some basic aerobatics and is a good second plane.
The Something extra is a great third plane and capapble of a lot more wild aerobatics and with the proper set up will do 3D.
You can improve both your building skills and flying skills with the 4*, then jump into the something extra. Or you can skip a step and go right to the Something extra and set it up with moderate throws for starters then progressively more throws as you improve on you flying.
Just my $.02.

Happy Flying

well im really looking for soemthing that i can get some life out of..... knife edges... hovering..... obviously not yet but something that can yield those capabilties later...... i also like how the leding edges on the soemthin extra are skinned and the two peice wing design is nice...

You will get bored of the 4star real quick unless you build it with all the mods. Then you will just try and get it to fly like the Somethin Extra but eventually you will just build the Somethin Extra. So, build the Somethin Extra first [:-]

I have built and flown both of these planes. The Something Extra is a friendlier build and setup right, low throws balanced a bit nose heavy would be a much better choice.
Here are the ones I built. I turned the canopy around, took out some dihedral, removed an entire cell from the outer wing, both sides to get it to roll faster, installed a Smith Mini Cowl and a Saito .91 etc etc. The SSE out performed it stock !

Can you tell I like the SSE ;)

There are some good mods for the SSE for knife edging and getting a better flat spin. I actually just picked up a new kit. I should never have sold the other one ;)
Saito 82 plus all the tail mods and bolt on wings for this one!

The Mid Star 40 is alright as well. That was my second plane. No complaints with that one either!
Not AS aerobatic though!
Tripping down memory lane here :)

I flown my SSE with both OS.70-fs and Webra.50gt, although I favour fourstroke engines in general, I prefer the Webra in this application... It's light and have enough power.
Great engine.
