Tweaking Dave Brown Engine Mounts
 

I have reached the point of sorting the firewall on my Tiger 2 build and just discovered that the Dave Brown 4045 mount is a touch narrow for my ST45...:eek:

It's been years since I worked with these filled mounts (first build after being out of the hobby for 10+yrs) and I'm wondering what everybody uses to carve off the inside of the beams to suit the cases a bit better. Will a Dremel and cutting bit do it? I need to remove a bit less than 1mm on each side where the cases roll out under the mounting tabs. I have filed them before, but this is a bit much for that unless I get desperate.

Any ideas?

I've done it with no ill effects. But the amounts I've shaved off were small amounts and at the bottom of each inside rail to allow the engine to set into the mount. This required me to take off more from the bottom and taper off as I worked the dremel tool towards the top of the rails. This leaves the top of the rail virtually unaltered and provides surface area to drill mounting holes. Your engine should start to fit into the mount as you set it in place, with only a small gap (>1/2 inch) between the engine lugs and the mount rails. If your gap is larger, I'd suggest a larger mount.

I'd use a Dremel and the large, 1/2", sanding drum. Don't take off any more than you can help.

And I'm sure Dave Brown will tell him the same thing many of us have already said. He may make'em, but we use'em.

Thanks for the replies. I will try a dremel and sanding drum this weekend. I don't have to remove the entire beam area, just add a chamfer to clear the case where the radius comes out near the mounting tabs on the engine. It will be a nice, snug custom fit when I am finished with it.
