Brushable epoxy
Hi, Can any of you gents out there advise me on how to thin epoxy i.e. to make it brushable to fuel proof an engine compartment for example ? I used rubbing alcohol with 5 minute epoxy and ended up with a goowy horrible result. Any advise appreciated.Thank you.

RE: Brushable epoxy
Rubbing alcohol has too much water in it. You want to use denatured alcohol or acetone to thin epoxy. You might want to use 30 minute epoxy too. Whichever you use, mix the epoxy first, then add the thinner.

RE: Brushable epoxy
I just put the bottles in the microwave for 30 seconds or less and it turns to water. It will thicken up as it cools but depending on how cold it is in your workshop you can get the job done before it gets too thick.

RE: Brushable epoxy
Nail polish remover will not be a good substitute, it has other additives. I have used denatured alcohol and acetone. I prefer the latter, IMO it mixs more evenly especially if you are using faster drying epoxy.
If possible stay away from 5 mins epoxy. Adding acetone does not add that much time before it cures. edited for spelling. |
RE: Brushable epoxy
Try some 20 min. Finish-Cure epoxy. It is brushable right out of the bottle and doesn't need to be mixed with anything. It's thin enough to brush and strong enough to hold like regular epoxy. You can also mix something like West System 403 microfibers with it to thicken it up like regular glue if you really need to. Works great.
