Flaps on a King Kobra
 

Someone has a thread on adding flaps to a King Kobra and I can't find it again. Any opinions out there on using a 1/3 of your strip ailerons for flaps on a sport flier? thx

I've had 3 of the KK's and didn't find a need for flaps on any of them.

The King Kobra and the Kougar are similar designs by the same person. If it flies like the Kougar flaps won’t be necessary. With the balance forward and the ailerons reflexed the Kougar will fly like an advanced trainer. Shims at the wing bolts for more up incidence will tame the airplane down even more.

If you like to experiment servos for each aileron in the center of the wing are possible with only minor modification. Then flaperons would be possible.

Dirtying up the airframe a very slight amount will tame the flight characteristics. Gradually the dirty techniques can be reversed and the airplane will go like a bat out of hell. With a clean airframe it tends to land fast. Wing incidence when sitting on the ground should be negative so it will stick when landing.

I have several Kougars and one is 17 years old. I also have a King Kobra, which is waiting for calmer wind for initial tests.

Probably an item better left for warbirds. I had seen a thread here somewhere where a guy had added flaps to his KK and loved how it would slow to a crawl to land. Thanks guys for your input

Bill S has the right idea. I was thinking split flaps, but I did have flaperons on the ones I had, and did put two aileron servos in the center of the wing as he suggested. That works well and you still retain the full aileron for aerobatics. I'm so used to using flaperons now that I forgot that I had them on these.
