Hey, do you still have that Bonanza?

I just spotted a kit on E-BAY. It looks like the box has been wet! I'm dying to get my hands on one that size. Surely, you must be board with yours by now. (hint) And was it really that tuff to build? I just did a Stafford Ercoupe and a Pica T28. Would I find the Bonanza more difficult?

On Hold

In fact, I searched a lot for reviews of this old kit.....
With no success at all...!
The plane is turning out to be a bit on the heavy side......
Oh, by the way, my box also look like it is wet....guess it this
the cartoon aging ...
The turtle deck is ABS type, I was working on the retracts
and primmed the wing ready for the final spraying...!
Overall nice kit....Thinking of casting a FiberGlass cowling instead
of the plastic one with the fit.....
Needed some sanding in the nose.....
My kit is on hold... Cause i am overloaded with work these couple
of days....
If you decide to buy this kit.... Keep me updated about your
building progress....
I am very much interested in this kit!
Regards
Hisham.

Sure, I'll keep you posted.....

.....I would also like a fibergalss cowl. Often the companies like "Stans" or "Fiberglass Specialties" will make up a mold and pull one for you if you send them your cowl as a guide. I would be surprised if one of those companies does'nt have a Sig Bonanza cowl mold left over. If they do have to make a mold, they charge quite a bit extra!! Maybe we could go in on it. I forget which company is which. I like those light white ones. They aren't geal coated, but they are white. I just put one on the T28 and it wieghed an ounce less than the stock plastic cowl!! You know how it is, an ounce here and an ounce there. It can add up. The Ebay add says that the bonanza kit should come in about 7 1/2 lbs. Thats what the Pica T28 wieghs and it wasn't easy to bring in at that wieght.
I suppose you just about have to fiberglass the fuselage to get a good smooth finish where it transitions from balsa on the bottom to the plastic on the top??
Oh, by the way. I am the slowest builder in the world!! Don't expect me to catch up to you!!!!

TexasAirBoss 11-03-2002 05:32 PM

I lost the bid.....

..... I was at work when the auction ended. I couldn't get on the computor until 10 minutes after it ended!! Three terminals, ALL be used to play solitare!!!!! I could scream!!!!

SIG Bonanza ?

I built two of the Sig's Bonanza, way back in the mid '70's, come to think of it, I don't believe I've kept any pictures, anyway, I built them in the V-tail configurations, they were powered by OS .60's, had to add a lot of lead on the nose, under the engine, in order to keep the CG within range. So if you still can, make sure that it balances at least close to were it is supposed to be, because if painted, a lot of weight will be added to that fuselage, they are very short nosed!
They flew very well, and very fast, I had flaps and retracts on mine, you better know how to use them, as this airplane comes in smoking, the V-tail had a lot of fish tailing, which is normal, flew very much like a pattern airplane, but if coaxed, would snap rather violently, beautiful rolls and loops. Once finished, they look awsome, but on the heavy side if you are not careful. By the pictures, it seems yours is pretty much done, but if you can, by all means make the stabilizer and fin and flying surfaces as light as possible. Good luck!

I'm sorry, I missread your question, you haven't started on it just yet, great, so by all means, if you can have the tail feather made in a built up configuration, and discard the heavy 1/2 inch sheet that they supplied with the kit, you'll be glad you did. and keep it as light as possible as you go, that plastic may not look like it, but it adds a lot of weight, just were you don't want it!

TexasAirBoss 11-04-2002 02:34 AM

Not much.....

....My max bid was $150. It sold for $152.50. What burns me up is the fact that three guys were using the computors to play cards. I would have counter bid if I had know it was going to go up that much. Earlier this mornig I checked and it was still at $102.50................I still have another idea. Iknow an older gentleman that has hoarded over one hundred kits. They would be gold on e-bay, but no, he prefers to find them good homes. You have to love someone like that. Once, I mentioned to a freind that I wanted a Navion. A week later, the word had gotten to him, and a Navion kit, A Berkeley, shows up at the door. That kit had been out of production nearly 40 years. So, there is still hope that he has the Sig Bonanza or knows where one is. Then plan "C", just keep watching out for one on EBAY and here. Man, I had my heart set on that kit!! Its cold, its raining, I need a bonanza!!

Well, I just finished a T28 about a month ago. I haven't started the Bonanza yet. I would be very interested in a glass cowl. A friend found a full page ad for the Sig Bonanza. Would that be helful?
