GP Extra 300S Cowl
 

I've got about 12 or so flights on my Extra and have noticed a couple of small cracks appearing in the cowl. I don't know if I want to lay a bit of glass cloth on the interior of it or find a aftermarket fiberglass cowl to replace it. The cowl is made of fairly thin ABS and attached at 4 points - I've noticed it vibrating pretty good when I'm doing my run up on the ground. My question is do you think it is worth laying cloth inside to reinforce for cowl or just get a glass one and have it over with? I put a fair amount of time into painting the one I have now and would hate to have to do it again but I haven't heard many good things said about the cowls that are included with the kits.

Holy smokes Dan[8D] That's a fine looking extra. You have obviously put an extensive amount of time into the paint,( not to mention puttint to two halves together ), I would try to scuff up the inside and glass it with a light weight glass cloth and thinned down epoxy. I thin mine with rubbing alcohol. I also mount my cowls using the rubber grommets from the servos and the brass bushing. This helps to isolate the vibrations. I didn't put my cowl together, instead I went with stans fibertech. You've done such an awesome job with yours, I'd try to save it with some epoxy.

Another quick patch is to lay down some carbon fiber strips and thin CA. You have to be careful, as sometimes the CA will seep out the crack and end up on your paint. I have to agree, that is one great looking cowl and worth the effort to save it. Good Luck, Dave

Dan is that the 40 or 60 GP Extra? I am wanting to get the GP Extra as my next kit, just wondering what you think of it. I am leaning toward the 60.

It's the 40 size with a Super Tigre G51 in it. So far it's been a blast to fly, very stable but yet can do just about anything in the right hands. If I had to do it over again I probably would have spent the extra cash and purchased the 60 size kit. I tend to fly my stuff further away than other pilots at my field so things can get small quickly. No complaints though with either how it built or how it flies.

Today I took the cowl off, cleaned it up, sanded the inside and laid some .75 oz cloth I had inside with 45 min resin. I took your advise and used some extra servo grommets and re-mounted the cowl. One night this week I hope to have it out again so we''ll see what comes of it. Thanks for the help from everyone.

I haven't a clue about the picture size but you sure get to see to details:) I have the 40 but a friend had the 60. Both flew the same, just the size was different. I think I had better power to weight with the TT 46 pro and 12x3.75 APC. I'd put an 11x4 or 5 on it if I flew it again. I stopped flying it because I love it to much and have a ton of other planes to fly. The GP Extras fly very true, much like a pattern ship and like speed to fly. They do land very well with just a touch of speed.

the cowl is abs plastic which is crap make a mould of be for it gets to bad then you can pull a coyp out of it i did to mine and i'm going to make it agina soon..
