Lt40/lt25
 

Howdy-
I'm curious as to the differences between these two planes- are they pretty much the same plane on a different scale? I'm almost finished with my -40, and I'm thinking about scratch building a -25 for kicks and lack of funds to buy a new kit. I've seen the specs on the two (70" span, 14.25 chord vs. 63" span, 11.25 chord; length, etc.)and I've got my -40 plans scanned and in a CAD program. It seems that I can pretty much just scale down what I have and go from there, but I'd appreciate any thoughts-

Umm... maybe I should ask which kit to build after my ARF-

Is your LT 40 an ARF? If you have the plans scaled down, there's no reason you couldn't build it to any size you desire.

No, it's a kit. Although I've been building balsa planes for years, this is my first foray into R/C. I'm simply curious if the plans for these two are identical-

They are fairly close as I remember, just built a fus. for the 25 about three weeks ago. The 25 is a tail-dragger and you may need a little help setting up the steerable tail wheel. You should be able to use a little thought and come out with a different appearing plane(kit-bashing) . As far as kits go, they are very basic but are great fliers, want a little fun, take off the wing ends eliminating the end bay, take out almost all of the dihedral (leave about a half inch under each end, then hang something like a LT 40 on it. Great little second plane.

LT-25s a nice trainer 2. I started out with one and still have it, albeit nothing to brag about.

Id rethink the scratch build for the purpose of saving money though.
I dont think you could buy the lumber, landing gear, hinges, hardware, ect., ect. for less or even at the cost of the relatively inexpensive kit.

The LT25 is NOT a scaled down LT40.

For one, the LT25 is almost 100% balsa. The only light ply in the whole kit is the landing gear brace, the wing brace and the firewall. The '40 has a lite ply fuse.

The LT25 is a taildragger with a pull-pull rear wheel.

The '25 comes in at almost 2 lbs lighter and will fly circles around it's big brother.

Unless you have a large selection of balsa sitting around, I doubt you could build one from scratch for the same price as a kit. If money's the point the kit is the better choice.
