DB SE5a, anyone else?
Hi,
I have DB Models SE5A kit, awaiting construction ,and was hoping if anyone else has built one before.i have been sifting through the the drawing, and the only point which needs clarifying,is that the instructions call for the longerons to be cut halfway through?,to allow the rear section to be drawn in,this seems alittle strange to me,surley this is going to weaken the structure ,there is a web on the bottom longerons, but thats it?. Any thoughts or ideas very welcome, and if you have already built one,all the better!! Cheers Lanc |

Hi,
Have not built the SE5 but have done the Spitfire and have started the Hurricane. It makes sense to cut the longerons to allow them to curve in to the rear. I assume the cut will be on the inside of the curve (and made with a razor saw or similar), once you have pulled the rear together your cut will close up and a drop of thin cyano on the spot should restore almost full strength. If you have any concerns, phone Eddie at DB, he is a very nice guy and has always seemed well disposed to helping his customers with advice. Simon. |

You want a sharp break at the rear of the cockpit, not a smooth curve. If you do not cut, the longeron will curve out, away from the desired line.

Hi
Cheers guys, that makes sense Just one other thing, the aileron linkage,as the wings are slightly undercamber, whats the best position for servo linkage,i intend fitting independent servos for each wing, the plan shows a servo outline nothing else,on the top wing, but i think they should be in lower wing, with aileron linkage to top wing. If thats the case, should servo rod exit above or below bottom wing, with undercamber to wing,do you suggest above, with access hatch to top of wing,or some other way, suggestions please guys!! Lanc |

Lanc,
Sorry, biplanes not my thing so I don't know the answer to that one. If I had been asked how I would do it (before reading your suggested solution) I would have put servo in top wing and made pushrod exit above the wing! Simon. |
