Canopy Glue - Secrets to Sucess??
 

SO I broke down and bought a bottle of canopy glue. Before I make a mess of my plane/canopy/shirt/pants/dog/desk are there any secrets to getting a good job with this stuff?

For the record, I still think it's plain ol' craft glue....looks, smells and tastes (don't ask) just like the stuff I used as an appetizer in kindergarten!

I use RC-56 glue, not the new pasty crap, the older white glue that dries clear. Glue it on, tape it in place till it is dry with electrical tape or plastic tape, and go fly it. Works great. You can trim it with stick on stripe tape or sticky back monokote trim sheets if you want to.

Dudes. Food for thought.

The best glue I have come across for canopies and everything else other than balsa is "Goop". Sticks everything to everything, including covering material. ABS, etc.

I've used the R/C 56 glue with great success. It does dry relatively quick, but if you catch it in time it does clean up with water and dries clear. Seems pretty strong, too.

I do as Flyboy with canopy glue,need only a thin bead around the canopy where it touches the plane.

I have the opposite problem,

I used RC56 to glue my canopy, but need to remove the canopy now.

What is a good solvent for this ?

Water is not working.

I used R56 on my UCD canopy and it was a mess. I've learned some tricks for the next time I do it. After marking the canopy placement with a felt tip pen take some masking tape and mask off the area 1/8 inch outside of the felt tip pen marking. after applying a bead of glue you can place the canopy and clean the joint without screaking the glue all over the side of your plane. You'd be suprised how messy it gets. Water works to a small degree while the glue is still wet, but once it dries I found that water was useless. If the glue dries you can use alchohol to take it off.

Well I glued it on last night with Pacer canopy glue. Couple of spots that didn't stick down I re-glued and clamped this morning. It was a bit messy, but cleaned up OK. Like everything else on this model (my first kit) this is something I would do differently next time around!

Heheh...I'm learning alot through the process...I started out wanting to build the most beautiful airplane anyone had ever seen...then I adjusted it to "looks good at 3 feet" then to "looks good from 15 feet" to "it sure flys great!".

I`ve just used Pacer C-56 on the canopy of my Midwest Extra 300. I marked the canopy postion on the fuselage with a series of pin holes pushed through the film covering at each side and around the front of the canopy.

No need to do that around the back edge of the canopy where it goes up and over the turtle deck. I lifted the canopy off and applied the glue around this area and then taped the canopy in place.

Without wasting too much time I drilled the canopy around the rear at 3" centres and screwed it down with tiny PK screws. That fixed the back edge nicely and held the rest of it firmly in position. I then ran a bead of the same glue around the rest of the canopy front and side edges with the canopy in place and held it down with a few tabs of masking tape while the glue dried.

It was remarkably easy to run a wet finger around the front and side edges and pick up the surplus glue while it was still wet.

The overall result is quite neat and acceptable to me.
