Scale Props - where to purchase?
 

Hi. I'm building a P-39 Airacobra and I'm looking for a scale prop. I've only been able to find a 3-blade Master Airscrew prop at my local hobby shop. It's black, but doesn't have the scale look.

Anyone know where scale warbird props can be purchased?

I'm unable to find them on any online retailers, and no local hobby shops seem to have heard of them. But it may help a bit.

"Scale" propellers are usually a waste of money if you're looking for a flying prop. For flight, use a propeller that will allow the engine to turn in its proper RPM range and still allow the model to fly correctly. Make a scale display propeller for when you're not flying. The main reason is that a scale propeller on most models would be nowhere near the correct diameter and pitch for the engine you'll be using. Also, some scale aircraft have three- or four-bladed props, which are not particularly efficient at our sizes...go with a 2-blade prop for flying.

For a good-quality scale propeller, you'll actually have to hand-carve one, unless somebody already makes one that suits your airplane. This would be a non-flying propeller, of course.

However, if you do want a 3 bladed prop for your plane, check Hobby Lobby and the Graupner "Super" series. While I have not used their 3 bladed props, I have used their 2 bladed ones and they work very well with 4 stroke engines. I'm sure you will be able to find one for a .91 4 stroke if that's the size engine you are going to use in your P-39 (Top Flite kit???).

There is solo props that you can adjust to get the correct rpm for your engine. I've used them and thay work well and are very scale. Check them out at www.soloprops.com
