First time builder - Glue question
Hey,
After building several ARF's, I'm now starting my first kit-build (Top Flite Elder). My question may seem a bit silly, but I really don't know. What kind of glue do you use for the general construction (wings, fuselage, ...) I have thin and medium ZAP (CA) and 6 min. and 30 min. epoxy. Do I best use thin CA overall (expensive) or is a general, white would glue OK?? what brand? Thanks for your advise, Phil |
RE: First time builder - Glue question
Alot fo guys are using yellow wood glue to build their kits. Tite-Bond seems to be a popular name. I personally prefer to use CA. Thin works for most applications. Epoxy where the manual specifies. Medium and thick CA is typically used when the joints are not as tight as we would like. I always use Epoxy when gluing Ply.

RE: First time builder - Glue question
CA for parts that you need to align and make stay put (like wing ribs.) Yellow wood glue (Tite-Bond) for general construction. And epoxy for parts that will be exposed to fuel.
All 3 glues are much stronger than the wood if the joint is tight. |
RE: First time builder - Glue question
I have A big selection of glues and use them all. My main glue is the thin CA. It only takes A couple of drops so no need to over glue something with it. I buy those long thin tips for it too so I can get into tight places and control the flow better.
My main problem with it is I have gotten reactions from it when I use the stuff in inclosed spaces or I work right over the stuff. No problems during the sumer when I have my door and window opened but this time of year it gets to me so I use more wood glue this time of year. The reactions are cold like or flu like symptoms and it's hard to tell the difference. The epoxy is used for bonding the hard woods like formers and the fire wall. The CA cost A bit but it goes A long way. If your not in A hurry then the wood glues are great and sand much better. |
RE: First time builder - Glue question
I use Titebond most of the time. I rarely use CA because of the hazardous fumes, it's hard to sand, etc. I use 30 min Epoxy for high stress areas like landing gear mounts.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies! Hope to have a fine build. Merry and happy, Phil |
RE: First time builder - Glue question
The only thing I use thin CA on is the CA hinges. I use thick CA, epoxy and Great Planes wood glue for all my builds. Thin CA is designed for a no gap joint and you have no time to adjust anything if you need to. Good Luck, Dave
