ACE 4-60 Engine

I am starting an ACE 4-60 and am wondering what engine to use. The instructions say to use a 60 4 stroke or a 45-52 2 stroke. I was thinking of using a K&B 65 Sportster that I have but after looking at the size of the fuse parts I am thinking the K&B will not be able to swing a prop big enough for this plane.

Years ago I had a 4-40 that I powered with an OS 48 surpass and it flew great. For this plane I am thinking of a Magnum XL-70 or XL-91.

My plan for this plane is to build it to the plans with one exception. I am going to set the total dihedral to 1". I did this on the 4-40 and it flew great.

So will my question is will the 65 work or should I go to the 70 or 91?

Thanks

Oddly enough, you have picked one engine, the K&B .65 two-stroke glow engine, which can and does spin larger than normal two-stroke props with ease. It would power this model just fine, as would the two four-stroke engines that you have mentioned, although the .70 is a bit light in the power arena for my tastes. However, the .70 might be just fine for your taste.

***I too love four-strokes most these days. Just wish they made some gasoline burning four-strokes that didn't cost or weigh so much. Then I wouldn't have to listen to the chain-saw sound of my larger models. At least the price of utility engines has come down, with the arrival of the Chinese gas engines.

The 4 in the 4-60 stands for four stroke. This model was designed to fly on those old, powerless four stroke, manufactured in the late 80s. They fly just fine with them, too.

I've built two 4-60s. Both were overpowered and flew best at reduced throttle settings. One had an OS 91 Surpass. The other an OS 61

I flew on powered by an OS 61FS. It was the right power for the design.

My suggestion would be the 70 Surpass.

I'm on about the same page with TomCrump, about the 4 60. Mine had an old Enya .60 fourstroke to begin with, and it had plenty of power for me.

The Enya lost a cam gear tooth one day, and I had a Magnum .80 fourstroke that fit right in. That was a bit too much power (for my skills at the time.) I learned a lot with that plane / power combination, and decided I was proficient. Then I planted it.

A few months ago I ordered the plans, from the AMA plans service. That will be a project when I get a few others out of the way. Nice plane.
Best wishes,
Dave Olson

Believe it or not, I wasn't saying that the four-strokes would under power the model. What I was saying was that the K&B .65 was capable of swinging the same sized large props with ease, unlike most two-strokes that really prefer to rev-up.

Ever notice that the 4*40 shows a Saito .50 on the plans? <G>

I've got one of these, had it for years....like when they first came out....ran a OS 61 4 stroke on it until it wore out.....can not say how many gallons of fuel was ran through it....but alot....just recovered it this past year....and installed a OS 70 Surpass II on the front with a 14 x 4w apc prop on the front..will pull it straight up as high as I want it to....in my mind a 91 would be just a little over kill...after all this isn't a 3D plane...and from having the 4-40 which I have also with a OS 52...you know that by setting the cg back it'll do about anything my fingers can keep up with...I did build another wing for the 4-60 and did exactly what you did or are going to do...I've got just shy of 1"...was going to shorten the wing by one rib bay, but didn't...had the Ace 60 Bingo, which has the same wing, and shortened it one bay and it was alot more responsive...I also installed two aileron servo's in lieu of the one shown on the drawings...If I knew how to post pictures here I'd would...if you wish send me your email address and I'll send you some...

Sometimes, just for kicks, compare the tach readings (in that forum) of the OS/Magnum 70/91. There isn't that much difference in apparent power between each manufacturer's .70 and .91. Either the .91's are dogs, or the .70's do a super exceptional job. <G>
