1/4 Threaded Inserts HELP!!
 

I need to bolt down my Great Planes Pete N Poke and dont really trust the Tap and Dye method that the kit suggests. I want to use 1/4 threaded inserts. Du Bro has discontinued this item.

Does anyone know where to find them.

You can get that type of insert at woodworking supply stores, http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=1048 for example. Our just use blind nuts which are available through hobby shops or local home centers.

Better yet, do it the way the kit suggests. I assume you are referring to wing hold down bolts, your post was not completely clear. Tapped wood blocks strenthened with CA with nylon bolts work great. Tough I have no experience with Pete N Poke, I have never had one fail on any plane that I have built.

You can trust the tap and die method. I have used this on even giant scale airplanes with no problem.

Just drill and tap the hole, then if you want a little extra insurance, put a few drops of THIN ca in each hole. Let it completely cure (about 5 or 10 minutes) then, run the tap through the hole again (Making sure to follow the original threads).

However, tapping the hold-down blocks on such a small plane, particularly if you follow the advice of MinnFlyer and harden them with CA, will be more than adequate.

You can also get the thread locks at Ace Hardware. I will have to agree with the others, I have never had a treaded wooden block fail. I have them on my giant scale planes as well as my smaller ones. The way that MinnFlyer has described how to do it is perfect. Good Luck, Dave

I prefer tapped in wood threads, use them on all my racers. Threaded inserts can be a little sloppy (IMO) and are a pain to install. If you have concern about the thickness of the wood, just glue a second piece of ply under the wing hold down block so you will have more meat for threads.

I even put in my landing gear with the drill/tap/CA/tap. If for any reason A hard landing removes the screws or bolts then I have plenty of wood left for the brass unserts.

Use the tap and CA method, It is better;), I just about lost my sukhoi because of the inserts pulling through the wood.[:@]

I would use the T-nuts. Tith the threaded insurts you would glue them in and I don't think they would hold verry well for a wing, probibly as well as a threaded wood. Those you have look fancy but I think the T-nuts work better and are cheaper

I also prefer the tap and thin CA method. However Ace also has a 1/4x20 blind nut that has holes in the flange to screw into position. Instead of the barbed type.

If you are going to use blind nuts, you need to use type that daveopam is talking about. The barbed ones will loosen up with the constant screwing and unscrewing and the last thing you want is a nut on the end of one of your wing bolts that you can't get off.

The drill tap ca tap is the only way to go in my mind. It was mentioned before that using that methond works well on LG and that has provent correct for me. When I was first learning to fly, I bought nylon screws by the dozzen from the Ace Hardware as I would usually shear off a landing gear every couple days. THe LG mount was 1/4 aircraft ply drilled and tapped with CA hardening. I never doubted the holding power of the threads and in fact even on a couple crashes that destroyed the plane, the thread in wood was intact and the stubs of the screws still in place. That method just will not fail you.

I am overwhelmed by all the responses. I go i have to go and by a tap and dye kit in the morning to get his wing mounted.

You will just need one tap (1/4 x 20 usually), the drill sized for the tap, and a tap wrench. Of course, tap sets are nice to have items!
