Items needed for building a kit?
So far I have purchased and assembled four ARF's and now I would like to take the next step and build from a kit.
I am not quite sure just exactly what all I will be needing becides the following. Kit: Plane of choice Work Surface: flat/level Hollow core door with ceiling tile. Adhesive: Epoxy and super glue. Tools: coping saw, exacto knife, drill, dremel tool and iron Coverning: monocote, ultracoat or fabric. Also question on the adhesive when and where do I use the glue versus the epoxy on what part of the plane? *Hopes this makes since* Thanks Blackie |

Looks like you've got the basic stuff figured out. There are a lot of other tools and such that are nice to have but not required. Depending on the kit you get, they often have a good list of things needed to build the kit.
Some other stuff you will need: * sanding blocks * various grades of sanding paper. (80, 150, 220, 320) * T-Pins * Triangle * measuring devices * clamps As far as glue goes, you can use CA for most everything. You will use epoxy for things that require maximum strength &/or working time like wing joints and fire walls. For covering, I can't do it with just an iron, I need a heat gun and trim iron. But that's just me. I know lots of folks work with just an iron. |

a couple things:
I would buy some wood glue. The CA (superglue) is expensive and puts off alot of fumes. Many people develop alergies.... I use the CA to quickly spot bond parts and then use the wood glue to complete the joint. You will understand better what I mean as you are building your plane. Make full size copies of your plans. (Kinkos) I agree with the Heat gun. It makes the covering much easier. Most kits require that you purchase additional items such as wheels...These items are usualy listed on the first page of the instuction booklet. Your instructions will tell you where to use which type of glue. Good luck and enjoy. |

A wife that will accept hours of you being absent and locked in a room all by yourself with eyes all red and glazed..drool running from mouth.. 7. A seperate checking account just for yourself... 8. A wife that dosen't mind you having your own checking account.. 9. Very short hair...so it'll be harder to pull it out when you have a problem and it's not covered in the instructions or missing that vital part.. 10. Ability to out think balsa wood...some times you want it to go one way and it'll usually go the other... 11. A wife that dosen't mind that you have dried super glue on your fingers and wants to hold hands and she gets a scratch.. 12. Never super glue with out being fully clothed... 13. A wife that will not laugh at you while applying fingernail polish remover to the affected area that is glued together.. 14. Remembering to wipe feet before leaving hobby room and not depositing little peices of balsa chips through house when you go to bathroom or get a soda.. 15. A wife that buys you your own Dust Buster or broom so you can remove said balsa collected on feet and not track it through the just cleaned house.. 16. A wife that dosen't mind your airbrush compressor humming at 3:00 in the morning in the next room.. 17. Neighbors that dosen't mind you running in a new motor without the muffler on..or one ot those wazoo tuned pipes.. 18. A wife that dosen't mind you breaking in a new motor in the driveway with the needle set extra ritch and getting a "lil" bit of oil all over her car, the house and the driveway.. and the only way you know this has happened is when it rains and all of a sudden their' big white, slick spots everywhere... 19. Extra trashcans for all the extra stuff that you bill be throwing out, like BIG boxes, lots of used towels, rags, cans, bags of balsa odds and ends, soda cans, pulled out hair etc.. 20. A wife that will let you taxie your new giant scale plane through the yard, blowing newly fallen leaves all over the place and dosen't get mad when you tell her it's the new $3000.00 leaf blower Other than that the rest of it will fall in place as time goes on.. :D |

the wax paper goes over the plans to keep the glue from sticking to the plans.

Blackie,
Good point on the was paper. You cover your plans with was paper as you build on top of them so your work does not get stuck to the plans. You can also buy Great Planes plan protector which works better but costs more. |

use wax paper...mucho cheeper...
Also can be used if ya woops on a wing saddle..or seat it in with silleycone...wrap waxed paper around wing squirt silleycone on the saddle place wing in saddle and tighten down, let cure cut off excess... Butter lids for mixing up epoxy, save old broken props to stir with. You would be supprised at the other uses of Q-tips besides cleaning your ears with... Wooden clothes pins to hold parts together with... 3-M makes a great sanding sponge....is gentile and conforms to curves and rounds... The list can go on.. DO NOT GET A WIFE!!!!!!!!! Unless it's in kit from..(That way ya can leave out the parts ya don't want) has instructions a 40 year guarenteeeeee and a liberal return policy no questions asked... A close friend will do for getting off superglue.. :D I use a Black and Decker paint striping heat gun to tighten my covering...(don't put it on high though), but guarenteeeeeee no wrinkels and is much cheeper and better built that a hobby heat gun.. |
