RE: First Kit ideas/help

+1 on the Sig kits. 4* 40 was my first kit build and I couldn't have enjoyed it more. Enjoyed it so much I built the Great Planes Corsair immediately afterwards because I was having withdrawls. After the laser cut Sig I was worried about the die cut (or die crush as some call it) of the GP kit. Luckily GP die cutting seems to be quite good as I had zero crushed or broken parts. I did have to shape the wingtips and turtle deck (from balsa blocks) of the Great Planes kit but found it quite a valuable learning experience for future builds and enjoyed the build very much. Right now I have the Top Flite P47 "Razorback" waiting to go on the building board for my winter project. I wouldn't hesitate on any Sig or Great Planes kit in the future. Thinking about building the Great Planes Extra 300S next unless Santa Claus drops the Top Flite P40 off in December.

It reminded me of this:

But really we all make typing mistakes. I do all the time and I'm a university professor teaching linguistics and English.

After I saw the link for the Something extra for 89.99 I have now added that to the list to choose from. Quick question for you builders. What type of board do you reccomend for building. Right now I have a big folding table that I have my planes on. It will make a good base but what is a good material to use for easy t-pin removal and install?

I built my something extra on a rickity folding leg table. Its really tough to get crooked with the nice fitting laser cut pieces.

A piece of drywall on a flat table will work fine.

My ONLY complaint with the kit, was marking all the pieces with their part number before assembly, that could ahve easily been laser etched on each piece.

TruBlu02,

There are some good building boards out there. I go to the local home center an pick up a piece of 2'x4' ceiling tile. It doesn't hold the pins quite as well as the nice balsa ones, but I destroy the thing before the model is built. I would hate to destroy a nice piece of wood as I build. I don't feel bad about cutting into or gluing on to the ceiling tile. Get yourself a cutting mat though.

If you decide on the Uproar, email or PM me. There's another tip or two.

I agree about the sig kits, and the four * .. However if they still make it, and you like the looks of the plane, I have heard many people say that the midstar 40 flies even better. For some reason they never took off though? I always thought they looked ok, and quite frankly could be kit bashed a little for a nice custom look as well..
I have built 3 SIG kits and they are a lot of fun to put together. I take my 4 Star to the field every time but I have a Midstar waiting to be built. I also like the looks of the Midstar, it is certainly different! I bought it this year in South Africa and it is still listed on their website so I am pretty sure they still make it.
