First Kit ideas/help
 

Hey guys. Lately I have been considering trying my hand at building from a kit. I am a long time ARF guy but the winters here are fairly windy and cold so there is not much to do in the winter. I have been looking around at different kit and I am trying to decide what I should make my winter project. I am looking for a simple sport flyer that I can use either a OS .20 or a Thunder Tiger pro .46. I was on Tower Hobbies website earlier and I was looking at the Uproar 40 kit they offer. It is only $59 and looks like it has fairly simple lines. I am an experienced hobbyist so I have the basics down but I need a easy kit to try my hand at. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!!

IMO the best kits are Sig kits because they are laser cut and fit snuggly, "just throw a bottle of glue into the box shake it and a built airplane will come out..."
and the instructions are clear even for a beginner builder and RC beginner, and at this forum you will find alot of sig kits threads.
from their line of products i'm sure you will find something.
i'm finishing the third kit from Sig.

Pick up a Sig 4 Star 40 kit for your TT Pro .46 Rediculously easy to build, you can frame one up in a weekend. Shorten the wings one rib bay and you will have a really fun to fly plane. And you can brag that you built it yourself!

I agree about the sig kits, and the four * .. However if they still make it, and you like the looks of the plane, I have heard many people say that the midstar 40 flies even better. For some reason they never took off though? I always thought they looked ok, and quite frankly could be kit bashed a little for a nice custom look as well..

Another vote for any Sig kit. I've built a few Sig kits and they are easy to build with very good instructions like Alex says. For your .46 - I'd go with the Four Star 40 or the Somethin' Extra. Both great planes, and great flyers.

I did build a Mid Star 40 and it did fly very well! Maybe slightly better than the Four Star. A little more work to build (not much) I wish they still made them

I also recommend the Sigs. I have built 5 of their kits so far. I have the Mid Star and the Somethin Extra and they are both great. I don't have a 4* 40, but I do have the 60 size with a clipped wing and it flies well also. The Kougar is also a nice flying plane, but it is a more difficult build in relation to the others. None of these planes are real difficult to build or fly. For your TT.46 I would suggest the Something Extra. It's a little more exciting to fly than the others.

Just a word of caution, not all Sig kits are laser-cut and easy to build. Many of their kits are pretty old-school and require a lot of building experience.

That said, the 4* is an excellent choice, but if you're a "Long-time ARF flier" the 4* may not be what you're looking for.

I have another suggestion: Get a Sig Wonder for that OS 20.

The Sig Wonder is a very small, very fast plane (Which can also be flown slowly). It is cheap, and due to it's small size it builds quickly, yet it incorporates most of the building techniques you will need to know for future builds.

Once you have built the Wonder, you can pretty much pick any kit as your next project without the fear of "Will I be able to do it?"

I've built and flown bolth, the midstar tracks better and is more axial in rolls, little faster than the 4*40, and it's still being made, here's the link.

Another vote for Sig here. I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Somethin Extra. This is a laser cut kit, awesome build, plenty of threads here on RCU regarding it, and a whole lotta fun to fly. Strap a TT Pro .46 on it and you'll have a blast. I have both a Mid-Star and a SSE and recommend either one for what you're trying to do. The Mid-Star is a bit "tamer" than the SSE IMO.

I loved my Something Extra, have an extra kit stuffed away for later..

Another plane I enjoyed building was the Tower Hobbies Extra Special, unfortunately, it has been discontinued. They do still sell a Fun-51 which is nearly the same plane, just a slightly different profile. Fun plane to fly, easy to build.

Seeing as you say you're looking for a "winter project," you'll need more than a Sig 4* to get you through the winter unless you happen to live in Hawaii. Maybe you could plan on doing a couple builds, such as the 4* just to find out if you like building and then a Cub if you do. The Cub will get you through even a Michigan winter.

Right now I am looking at either the Sig Mid-star or the Tower Hobbies Uproar. Has anyone built this particular model? It looks pretty cool. I really like the Something extra as well but I'm not sure I want to spend over 100 bucks though for the kit. I do not have much time to work on my planes right now so one kit will probably get me through the winter pretty well.

Well, if you want to go 3D, get the uproar, general aerobatics, go with the midstar.

Ditto, although you don't HAVE to fly the Uproar as a 3-D plane.

Both are pretty basic builds

Again I run into the problem of choices! :D Thats the problem with this hobby. Too much cool stuff and not enough money! I do appreciate the input guys!

I've built Uproars. First according to the plans, then 2 from scratch with differing changes. That's one of the nice things about building. Since it's your first build, go with the plans. (Except beef up the fuse sides where the wing is the thickest. The fuse sides get really small there, and it's a weak point.)

Another question is where you are with your flying. Do you fly fast, slow, 3D, Pattern, tame, wild... Uproar is a nice flyer, but won't really 3D well, and doesn't have enough side area for a good knife edge. Other models have different qualities.

I am not to worried about 3D or anything crazy. I have a GP Reactor for 3D and Pattern stuff. I am just looking to build a simple sport flyer that looks cool. I am still torn between some of the Sig kits and this Uproar. Thanks for the tip on the fuse sides! I have been looking at the build manual and i see where you are talking about.

That's alright, the one I built was for a fellow modeler, he chose ultracote hot pink and neon green, I couldn't tand to lookat it, little own fly it. Was fast with a rossi aero .45 and a mac's tuned pipe, about 120mph turning a 10x8 apc.

I built two midstars and finishing 4*60 now.
the tower picture of the midstar is not doing it justice its much more beautiful in real!!
the midstar is a very good flyer, trainer slow or aerobatic and can take alot of beating it has all plywood fuselage.
hmm had one midstar crashed twice nose in, fixed it the same day still flying great.
