The RSC RV-50 has arrived. It is a nice package. Packed well. Included in the box is:
1. Engine
2. Muffler with 3 graphite impregnated gasket
3. Aluminum Standoffs (4) with 8 case hardened bolts
4. Electronic ignition Module
5. Spark plug with spacer (2)
6. Spark plug wrench

I fabricated a drill guide to drill the props. This engine has a 10mm shaft and 6 5mm bolts to retain the prop so the props will have to be drilled. I also installed 5mm-0.8 keenserts in both ends of all the aluminum standoffs so there will be steel on steel threads. The electronic ignition will operate on 4.8 - 6.0 vdc so unless a regulator or a diode is installed LiPo or A123 batteries can't be used. The muffler is really big and bulky I may look for a different solution but I have to wait until I see what kind of room I have on the AMR Trainer 50. The last two pics are the drill guide I made for the prop and the Keenserts I installed in the aluminum stand offs.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

Hello Ron,

Glad you received your engine. Dont worry for the space, we put a DA50 in our trainer 50 protoype and there is plenty of room all around. Your engine is almost identical to the DA50.

Only few more sleeps before you get the kit:D

By the way, i advise you that the kit you will receive was shipped before we add one piece that was added to the design after. It is the F19 plate. This can be replaced by a piece of balsa or if you prefer, Michel can send it to you. It is not a big part and it is used to close the fuselage at the rear of the wing before sheeting this area. I have added this to the design when the kit was already cutted and packed. The manual was aded in the box just before shipping and Michel was not aware of this addition. Or if you have some plywwod, i can send you a PDF drawing of the part and you cut it yourself (fastest method).:(

Thanks Vincent. I will look at it whaen I get the kit. I do not suspect it is very difficult. I will most likely use Ply. I am building for strength since this will be used heavily for training. It often seems once someone gets there hands on a giant they are hooked.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

it shows that you guys do have fun. My next plane after the trainer 50 will be a giant Bipe sized for something in the 90cc range. Maybe the RSC SV-100 but the $$$ in multi cylinder is starting to get outside the envelope. I am not so much into scale but more in the standoff scale. I am very interested in a Super Stearman but the big kits are so intricate and expensive. I think that is because they are geared towards the scale guys which is understandable since they show the most interest in giant models. I think there are more like me that would be happy with giant easier built kits like AMR builds but in standoff scale with a focus more on an affordable giant solid flying kit. I am not being critical to all you guys that love all out scale. That is cool and your place in this hobby is one of the defining segments of RC flying. Its just not my gig.

Hello Ron,

It is one of our next projects to make a kit for a Stearman biplane. This should happens by end of 2009. Of course, AMR will design in order to make building as simple as possible. I dont know yet for what size of engine it will be.

That is great news on the Stearman. THe 50 Trainer is in Memphis Tn and will be here Tuesday. I have the Fowler flaps almost completed on the Rascal 110 then it will go to my friend to be covered since my covering abilities are not good. I will be on the look out for more info on the AMR 35% Stearman. It is 70 degrees F here today and raining with tornado warnings.

I received the kit today and there was no shipping damage. I spent about 2 hours removing the parts from the sheets of lite ply and sorting them. The laser cutting is awesome. The parts almost fell out and the cuts were very clean. Game on!!

Ron you are in business.
I was very pleased with the quality of wood AMR uses to cut the kits and all the hardware is grade "A". I will be watching.

I have finished reviewing the manual and parts and have started basic assembly. The only issue I have had so far is that the interlocking pieces are really tight. When I tried to fit them together like a interlocking puzzle piece, the lamination of the plywood started separating. So to resolve this I placed a 3/4 inch plywood block over the joint and lightly tapped the block and the pieces went right together without damage.

Edit: Ok I made my first rookie mistake. It will not be my last. I have removed the 1/4X1/4 Balsa from one of the pieces and moved it to the other side. I will add the new pic so everyone can see the wrong and right way to do it.

I've been watching this thread with interest. I was amazed at all the wood and hardware that was in that box. I really have to ask though. Are you going to build that big monster at the dining room table? I have to use the garage for projects of that size and duration. Keep the pictures coming.

Jack

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

Hello ROn,

I am glad you start the building.

Looking at the pictures, you are building two wing of the same side. You have to glue the 1/41/4 stick on the other side to make the other wing. OR maybe it is becauce you are building the two sets of wings that you got in your kit.

Whe the parts are tight, you can sand the tab a little bit to ease installation.

Regards,

Vincent

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

Hey Jack. Actually I build in my hobby room and the kitchen counter when I need a flat surface. I just put the stuff on the table for pictures. That table has been in my family for over 150 years. I would never build on it. As long as I clean up after myself my boss (wife) doesn't hassle me.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

I thought so. I have a 6' x 2' bar in the kitchen that is perfectly level and sturdy as a rock. I built it myself. It would be a great building bench, but I know better than to set up there. It was below freezing in my garage where I am currently building my Senior Telemaster kit. I had to come in and sit by the fire for about an hour to thaw out when I got through with the fin and stabilizer build. I was only out there for a couple of hours, but that was all I could take. I wish I had seen the thread on the Trainer 26 before I ordered the Senior Telemaster kit, I would have bought it instead. I still may build it in the future. It looks like a hoot to fly. I'll keep an eye on your thread to see how the construction goes. The parts look inpressive, especially after dealing with the poor quality wood supplied by Hobby Lobby in the ST kit. With the limited hardware included and the poor quality (smashed) die-cut parts, the ST is no bargain at $125. Good luck on the build and have fun. That's what it's all about.

Jack

Jack you are a wise man. I understand your frustration with inferior kits especially in the trainer and slow fly type aircraft. The other plane I am flying right now is a Sig Rascal 110. It is a ARF kit and flies great but is built really light. I returned the first kit because the wings were crushed. The second kit looked fine and I flew it for 3 months then decided to add flaps to it. When I removed the covering from the wings I found cracks all through one of the wings both in the spar webs and ribs. Basically the tension of the film was holding it together. This kit from AMR is really built. All the laser cut parts are lite ply. The landing gear, unlike the light weight gear on the Rascal, is massive. I have not built much so far but from what I have seen this plane will be rock solid.

I started building up the flaps and ailerons today. Note that the ailerons are different for the right and left wing but the flaps are the same.

It looks totally sweet, but you better get that sawdust off the table! The construction is elegant.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

I fully agree with jdgt2, the saw dust over such an old table is terrible but at least, there is a proof of good work:D

You did an excellent job Ron. They look exactly like the ones i have in my TRAINER26. How long did it takes you to build the flaps and aileron?

At this rate, the wing will be finished by monday. It took me 2 evenings to build them and a couple more to make the ailerons and the flaps and to finish the wing assembly.

And the most important thing is that this plane is so fun to fly (did i say this before?)

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

It took me 2 days to make the flaps and ailerons. I suspect they are harder to make than the wings. There was much work involved. Tomorrow I will add the trailing edge and wing caps to the ailerons and they will be complete. When I posted the pics I saw the saw dust on the table and went right over and cleaned it off. I might be dumb but I'm not stupid.

RE: AMR 50 Trainer

You are a smart man, Ron. I just couldn't resist giving you a ration about it. I've spent two days building the tail feathers of my Senior Telemaster. Lots of sanding involved to get the stabilizer shaped after gluing all that square stock together. Better straight than sorry, I say.

The ailerons are complete. I added the trailing edge piece and the rib caps. They look really good. I compared them to the ailerons on my Rascal 110 and they are the same length but twice as deep and 3 times as thick at the root. These control surfaces are big.
