Installing retracts in a built up wing??
Hey all.
Ok, I'm currently building a warbird, bf 109, and have come to the point of fitting the retracts. They are Spring Air items, nice and sturdy. Problem is placing them in the scale location is fine, but the only way to get the wheel to completely retract into the wing is if I cut the main spar out to give clearence for the wheel. This is the part I am not comfortable with. Does anyone have any idea on how the spar can be 'reinforced' to allow this? The 109 is being scratchbuilt from Brian Taylor plans and is .60 size (1/6 scale approx) It just seems wrong to remove a section of spar to make this happen, but this is also my forst set of retracts, so I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers |

How far past the spar does the wheel sit?
In other words... Would it be possible to fit a second spar directly behind the first that could extend out to about 1/3 the wingspan? |

This I will check out.
The plans call for a 4" wheel but I might shrink it down to 3.5 or 3. From memory there is a fair bit of the spar to be removed as the 109 wheels retract outwards & at an angle to the rear. I also have to try and find some skinny wheels that will sit inside the wing. I'm sure someone has tackled this problem before, just gotta wait till they show up here;) |

Was searching the net (gotta love the internet) and found some pics of what I believe you are talking about Minn.
Something similar (or exactly) like this:: |

Check out http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/default.asp in the Brian Taylor section. There are several BT 109 builds documented.
