Lanier Shrike 40 / Reducing Airfoil
1 Attachment(s)
All right , what you will see here is a pain in the neck lol .... no just kidding is going to be a reduction on the airfoil and on the fuselage with just one purpose .... less drag .
I'm not following the manual at all so if you know the steps or the way the Shrike needs to be building and you notice this looks like other way Yes you are right I'm just following my way , I hope she could be finished . :D I'm not sure if this thing will be able to fly due to the change of airfoil but I want to take it like an "expriment" . I'll save some words and let the pics speak by themselves , feel free to make any comment though . |

Reduction on ribs .
The last pic show all the ribs modified and original . |

The total amount of the reduction was 5/8" at the highest point on the first rib and proportionally on the others ribs.

Reduction on the fuselage (height) .
The pic shows 8mm but in fact it was 9mm , at the last moment I decided to move back the fire wall 1/4" so that it needed to be reduced 1mm more . ATVVFMX thanks for the words. :D |

Reduction on the formers #2 ( fire wall ) and #3.
Both were reduced 3/8" (width) and 1/4" (height). |

Fire wall with blind nuts .....
Due to the reduction and the big block size engine I couldn't use a normal mount so I needed to make my own as a back plate mount with 1/8" aluminum sheet . |

A view front with the mount and the "surplus" part that needed to be cut.

I needed to carve the lower front block wood to allow fit the engine and to getting out the screws of the back plate mount .

To save some work rounding the nose I did use the dremel at the begining .
|
RE: Shrike 40 / Reducing Airfoil

The nose was reduced to fit a 2 1/4" spinner instead of 2 1/2" (originally). I did need to make the former #1 too . [:-]
I also did a detachable piece (see pics) to allow get out the engine . |

Begining the wing....
I added 2 spars (spruce) parallel to the leading edge through all the wing from root to tip for a better reinforcement you know just for in case . ;) As I did reduce the airfoil I needed cut off the rib tabs so that I needed to use some "tools" ( Mini Dv casettes box) to avoid a bend on the stock spars ( not wich I added to the wing ) during the glueing . Please see the pics for a better understanding. On this step I spent about 2 hrs. to have all the ribs aligned before start glueing , measuring LE , measuring TE , measuring , measuring , measuring ....... this has been the only "hard" step during the build so far . |
RE: Shrike 40 / Reducing Airfoil
Just as a note : on the pics above the right wing is the one is aligned to the plan , as I narrowed the fuse only one wing can be aligned at same time . Yes I needed to aligned twice .
