Covering Question

Hey all, Quick question on covering. We have a 1/3 Balsa USA Flybaby Bipe that is in dire need of recovering. Obviously its a big airplane and takes a lot of covering. I was looking on hobbycity.com and i saw this covering

Does anybody have experience with this? It seems like it is pretty cheap for how much you get.

RE: Covering Question

I have not tried their covering but will next time I order some Zippys. If you buy some please let us know if it is better than $cote.

RE: Covering Question

It is going to be expensive to recover it no matter what i use, but wherever i can save money, i will.

That plane is just begging for some Solartex!!!:D I haven't tried that covering but it's priced about the same as what I'm getting my Ultracote for from my LHS. If you use it let us know how it is.

RE: Covering Question

I love Ultracoat,
I hate Moneycoat,
BUT when I sanded a bit to much off from a balsa sheeted foam wing (I could see the blue foam thru the thinned out 1/16th balsa) I knew I had to use a low heat film to keep from melting the foam core.
At my local hobby shop they had some of Top Flite's Econo Kote for 8 bucks a roll. I bought 3 rolls and am just tickled pink with how it handled and looked when I got done.
225 degrees is what the instructions said and I used my temp guage and did as I was told. The foam was not damaged. It handled a lot like Ultracoat and nothing like that ucky moneycoat. So I covered my wing, didn't melt the foam, and got the covering way cheep. This is on an electric pylon racer so fuel will not be a problem and I think I just may buy some more and try it on a glow powered racer!
My only complaint is the difficulty encountered in getting the backing off but oh well ya just can't have everything.

Mike

What temp gauge are you using. My infrared temp gauge only goes to 110C (230F) and it is too hard to set the iron. It will not measure 250F, of course.

Thanks, I forgot about the simple analog model at Tower. Simple is best.

RE: Covering Question

How about Sig Koverall? More work but much better in my opinion. I have read others have used dress liner from fabric stores. Do a search and you will find some information. Fabric covering is not that difficult and in some cases much easier than the films.:D

I have the same plane. Covered in Koverall and painted with Rustoleum.

RE: Covering Question

Ill look into different types of fabric. It was previously covered in white monokote with red trim. If i can find a picture ill put it up. It looked nice like that. I am not looking for it to be a scale, just a nice covering job.
