Get a hollowcore door from a lumber yard - it should be flat and smooth - put it on some 2 x 4's and you are all set!

There are some other links here that tell more, but this is what I have heard.
1. Cheap! A par of saw horses or similar, 1 30" hollow core door and 2 2'x4' acoustical ceiling tiles make a great table. The door is light and straight. The tiles are for sticking pins and knives into to hold stuff. 2. Home Depot and Lowes have the cafeteria style tables that fold up, except now they are plastic and around $45.00. That plus 2 ceiling tiles and your set. Walmart actually has one that folds in half too for $50.00, though I have not tested how staight it is yet. You don't need ceiling tiles, but if you are building, they are cheaper to replace than a table. 3. Really Cheap!!! :) Wait for "big" trash day and get one of your parents to drive you around and look for a big desk someone is throwing away. Maybe a relative already has one, or an office someone works at. Good to hear you are starting now. Good luck and God bless. :) |
Old Desk!!
I got my desk at the Salvation Army for $20.00. Used sheets of note book paper under a piece of sheetrock to get a perfectly flat surface. Total cost is around $30.00. When the piece of sheet rock got worn out I just put another piece on top of it. Gotta love all those drawers for storage!

Home Depot or Lowes kitchen counter tops. Find one with a chunk out of the corner (very common)and ask them for a discount. I like the white and they have a curved back that keeps stuff from rolling off .
Then use 2x4s to build a frame with legs and sit the counter on top. While you are there get a piece of acoustic board (white on one side) and you can pin to it for building. |

easy and cheap, i built mine out of 1X3's and mdf board.
materials list 1 sheet mdf (partical board) 3/4 or 5/8 thick , have them cut it in half so you get 2' X 8' sheets. 7 - 1 X 3 X 8 i used 1 5/8 " screws attach the 1x3's to the bottom of 1 piece of mdf to build a frame, determine how high you want your workspace to sit, (i have mine 30") cut 4 legs, attach them to the inside of the frame, then box in the bottom with 1x3's next cut 4 notches in the other piece of mdf slide it in, waaalaaaaaaaaaaa a table with a shelf on the bottom. i like this table you may not but i only have about $30 in it, plus it's big enough to have 2 work stations on it GoodLuck. |

I soloed on an LT-40 bARF.
I built my second plane-- a Kadet Senior with ailerons and a TT 91 4-stroke. I built my Kadet SR on the floor of my kitchen in my apartment. It was reasonably straight and I was so inexperienced at flying-- I didn't know the difference. :D |
