Newbie checking in
Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie checking in. Before I make a mess of my new project, I'm all ears to any help. Here's the particulars. I've been building all kinds of models for over 50 years. This will be my ultimate project. It's a Don Smith 1/9th scale B-24 J from Precision Cut Kits. Right now I'm starting to build the assembly board. I'm welding together some 2 in. square steel tubing, 82 inch by 24 inch and attaching a 3/4 plywood board to it. Then I'm attaching a thin steel sheet to it. My best friend Bill, has a grinding shop so he will grind the whole assembly board perfectly flat. Then during assembly, I can use various welders squares that are magnetic that I will use to keep all the parts perfectly square during the glue up. I will try to keep you all up to date with pictures during the project. The reason for the build is my Dad. He was a Flight Engineer on a B-24 during the war and was shot down and was a POW for 15 months. I want to build this as a tribute to all the fliers in WWII. I will probably build this as a flyer but never fly it. It would tear my heart out to see it fail. I want to donate it to a museum for future generations to enjoy. But I'm always open to suggestions if you have any. I've also gotten a suggestion from another post to possibly fly it once, video it and donate the plane and the video to a museum to show others how the model flys. And no way will I fly it, only a very experienced pilot will give the controls to. Dave Yatsko [email protected] |

RE: Newbie checking in
Good Luck,
IMO the B-24 is much more impressive airplane than the B-17, much meaner look and very practical for RC like higher wing and double fin and nose gear. As for donating it well there is a diner i like to eat at because they make good food and not for the RC war birds hanging from the ceiling but its pretty amazing. Alex |
