RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
Gary,
Are you using a protective layer between your build and the plans? Something like wax paper or plans protector? Brian |
RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
Brian,
It is a good idea to do that so the plans don't get wrecked, only the wax paper. John |

Good.
A strong recommendation for you- draw templates of every part you put together. Keep the plans in top shape. Kits are being dropped by manufacturers these days as if they are toxic to them. When you have templates and you like the airplane, if they drop this kit, you can build another. Brian |

Tinman,
A lot of people keep the sheets/planks the parts are removed from to use as templates, works just as well as tracing everything, except you don't have to do all the work. So keep them! A lot of people fully sheet the wings and turtle deck instead of leaving them open. Sheeting the wing keeps your covering from sagging under a hot sun. Sheeting the turtle deck just makes the plane look better overall. I didn't see a lot of covering recommendations but it's never too early to start thinking about colors. Ultracote is really easy to use and gives you a nice finish. BooBoo's that would be there forever with Monocote can be "massaged" out of Ultracote usually. It's the first iron on covering I used (on my 4*, coincidentally) and I was shocked how great it turned out. My LHS sells used planes and hangs them from the ceiling...some of the covering jobs I've seen...absolutely horrid. Kiss your wife goodbye, she'll be seeing a lot less of you. It's absolutely addicting. As soon as I buttoned up my 4* I immediately ordered the Great Planes 40 Corsair (I love Warbirds)..then the Top Flite P-47..then scratch built a Skyshark FW190A8 from plans (because of the abscence of German bird kits in .60 size...and I wanted to try scratch building) then the Top Flite P-40 (currently in progress), Top Flite Spitfire still in the box and a Giant Scale ME109F/G/K that'll get built this winter. Welcome to the disease. |

HAHAHA I replied, "yes!" & just left it at that! LOL |

Talking of having it bad... My beautiful wife has already told me that she thinks I love my planes more than her....what could I say....
Four star 40 on the flight line GP extra 300S on the table and a 1/4 scale tiger moth under the table waiting, oh yeah and a 1/6 cub waiting for covering - had to start building the extra first:eek: Talk about a cash absorber - still need to get the engine for the extra. And I still love my wife:D |

Do more house chores...empty/fill the dishwasher... Wash some clothes. Wives always like it when you help around the house and makes her a little more forgiving when you spend 8+ hours straight sitting in a shop building what my wife considers a "Toy". My collection grew so fast my Hangar is her grandparents vacant house right down the street.
In the meantime, here's another P40 project I've been working on in the garage. It's a P40 tree swing for our two kids. Once built it'll be covered with heavy canvas tarp (tack nailed to the frame...which will also look like rivets, and painted with exterior house paint) I've got more of it done now, the fuse is 9 feet long and the wing is 16 feet currently. It kinda grew on its own to that size. I don't know if the wing will stay at 16 feet, might end up less once I get the wing roughed in and more finalized (all the parts are cut out and it's dry assembled but not "locked in" yet. I've had to rethink hanging this thing and have settled on using steel cable to suspend it between two huge oak tree's in the backyard. I don't think the single limb I had in mind is up to the task, plus the left wing would hit the tree trunk. You'll probably recognize it's construction is very RC based. No plans for this of course, just doing it out of my head. How's that for "badly bitten". |

Pic I found on my phone with the other tail feathers on. Properly "ribbed" to give an airfoil shape of course...what kid wants a swing with flat boards for control surfaces?
Daughter - 4, Son - 2. Son has to point out every real plane he see's flying.. I think it's contagious. |

RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
Hey guys!
I've got a brand new Saito 125 sitting here in the box... alot of guys that have built the 4*60 have put the 100's on their planes! I wonder how this 125 would sit on this plane? is it physically too big compared to the 100? if it did fit, would I need to beef up the wings in any way? I'd hate to destroy the plane b/c of too much engine! any help/info is great! |
RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
Ive heard of guys putting a 125 on the 4* with no problems except for ground clearance with that big ole prop. With the LG upgrade, youll be fine. And dont worry about the extra weight of the 125. Youll still be adding lead up front.
Your gonna that love that combo! :) |
RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
thanks Gary... sounds like good news!!! the biggest I've heard is the 100!!! I do plan on putting on different landing gear, front & back!!!

RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
Tinman...I still owe you some photos of the Four Star 60.
They're still coming...I need to quit dragging my heels! I'm almost done with the fuse. |
RE: Yep, another beginner build question...
LOL
it's alright Arctic... take your time... I should get a good start on my wing this weekend, I hope... |
