Kit building table?

Hi guys, I'm a newb so please excuse the dumb question.
What do you guys use on your table to be able to use stick pins and such? How should I prepare a table? I'm getting ready to start my first build.

Thanks http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif

a piece of sheetrock or ceiling tiles are often recommended. i've used both with satisfactory results. a flat table is more important.

Never thought of ceiling tiles that's easy enough.lol I've also read somewhere on here about sometimes using wax paper over the plans?

Thanks

I use 1/2 inch blue foam insulation board (4x8)
from lowes/depo. Wax paper over the plans
also. Get an interior door for a flat suface
while your there.

yes, the wax paper is a must. and a hollow core door is $30 or so. cheap for a really flat surface.

The wax paper is so you can glue over the plans but NOT to the plans. I found a nice table (2'x5') at a rumage sale for 5 bucks, it's just the right heigth & really flat. About every 3 or 4 builds I'll go to Home Depot or Lowes & get a half sheet of MDS board, the pins stick in it real well & it's flat.

Wax paper or if over time you have old rolls of monokote that you find is useless, you can steel the clear backing film from the roll and use that, I've never had anything stick to it. Just be carefull when gluing, especially around pins, sometimes the glue will seep down the pin and glue the whole shabang together, including the board.

You got that right!!! I tried using some cheap wax paper I got at the Dollar Store. Uh, it seems there wasn't a whole lot of wax in THAT wax paper.. I use the good stuff now !!!

hi... im a brand new builder as well... i just finished the wings on my first build, a 4 star 60...

for my building table/surface, i went with an old metal (super heavy duty) desk... its super flat... but, after talking to many of the folks here at RCU, i decided to buy a solid core door (home depot) and top it with ceiling tile...

this has worked very well for me... im on a tight budget, so i needed to get the things i had easy access to, for the right money...

im very happy with the way my very first build is going and my work surface...

a few weeks ago i posted a poll here at RCU about what the people HERE would rather build on...
heres that thread if you want to see...

good luck with the beginning of a whole new world of modeling!!!
its fun and satisfying... just take your time and follow all instructions!!!

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot(or whatever similar that you have) and get an inexpensive hollow core door and two or three ceiling tiles. Glue the tiles flat to the door(use a few weights If necessary while the glue dries). The door was a bit long for my shop table so I cut about 12 inches off one end. I then cut off the reinforced end off the removed 12 inch piece and epoxied it back to the door work surface to keep the cut end rigid. I'm now on my fourth plane on that one door. When the ceiling tiles get messed up after a few builds, just turn the door over and add a new set of tiles on the other side for a fresh new surface.

Thanks guys!
I'm headed to Home Depot and Lowes tomorrow. Love the hollow door idea but what do I use for the legs? Build upa couplesaw horses?

Thanks!

These work Great.

I've never needed a work surface the size of a door to build any kit.
