Engine poll for RV-4

OK, I can't decide which engine to use in my RV-4 so I need some help from you guys.

Choices are:

1. OS 46FX
2. OS 50SX
3. OS 52 4 stroke
4. OS 70 4 stroke.

What do you think?

What do I think?

I think you have biased your poll.

Don't you know about Saito engines? Or the YS two strokes? Rossi? K&B? Or even the Magnum?

Come on, give us some real choice.

Had you allowed it, I would have chosen a Saito.

Bill.

Engine poll for RV-4

Well Bill, had I wanted to know which engine to use, period, I might have included other brands. But, seein' as how I get OS engines for free, I thought I would limit my choices to OS.

P.S. Gotcha on the free thing, didn't I? I'm partial to OS.
I must admit though that I'd really like to see a 60T on it, but I can't drop $500+ for the engine.

Thanks.

If I had to pay your prices I'd probably use a lot more OS engines. My last OS purchase was a 46 FX, I have it on a Magic, it does very well with the APC 12.25x3.75 prop. But that set would not be suitable for your plane.

If you think the 46FX (with a suitable prop) would pull the plane OK, I'd be inclined to the 70 4s engine.

If you think the 46 wouldn't be enough power I'd have to go with the 50 2s engine. It will give a little more power than the 46 withought the weight penalty of the 4s engine.

Now tell me how to get OS engines at the same price.

Bill.

GMS .47 will haul this thing around easily. Plus you cant beat the price @ $79.95 or trade in a junker engine and get $20.00 off that price :D. If you go with this engine there are a few things you should do before running it. Less than an hours work, but boy is it worth it.

I was jokin' about the free engines (see the P.S. in my post).
I've always used OS and never really thought about trying other brands. I think my head would blow up if I added more choices to the mix considering I have a hard time deciding between just the different OS engines.

Really, it should do very well with the 46FX on it.

If you want four stroke, then the FS 70 is probably the best. But it's less power, and more than $100 additional out of pocket.

Stick with the 46.

Bill.

PS: I just went and pegged your poll. Three whole votes. And none for the same engine. Now we just need one vote for the little 4s and there will be a 4-way tie. doesn't help much, does it? wr.

I like my .52 on the RV4...nice combo - VERY stable aircraft!

Why even consider the .46 FX when the .50 SX fits the same space, and will turn more prop. Looks like a 3 engine race.

Since I don't own any OS 4-strokes, my vote is for the 50. (of course, a saito 56 or 72 may be interesting...but, their not free)

I wasn't sure if the 50 was too much as the 46 is the largest recommended 2 stroke. In addition to that, I have several new 46's so I was wondering if the 50 would be enough better to justify saving the 46's for something else.

Stay with the 46FX. You already have it, and that's a very good reason to use it.

Bill.

The 50 provides more power, but not nearly enough to justify buying one if you already have the 46.

Use what you have, it will be just fine.

I have the 50 SX in a GP Cherokee. A lot of power. The RV-4 would scream with this engine, however if you have a 46 laying around, use it. Or just do what I do and buy a new engine and tell your wife you will have to build another plane for the old engine. LOL

I built the RV-4 last year and put an OS .52 4C in it. I was happy with this combination. Last month I got "dumb thumb" disease and crashed the plane. Ordered another kit, but this time I am putting in a Saito .72 4C. Will let everyone know how it flies once I finish the kit. Should have the plane flyable by this weekend.
