1 st low wing
 

hi - coming to the point when i need to buy a 1st low wing plane - not rtf - flies like it's on rails and capable of aeros - options so far sig astro hog or gp ultra sport - any thoughts - thanks in advance

My Astro Hog is my first low wing plane.

If you want something that flys like it is on
rails, I would go with the GP Ultra sport.

Sounds to me like you're describing the SIG 4* series, 40 or 60 size. I've had both sizes & both are the easiest flying planes I've had !! The "60" might be a little more forgiving than the "40". The kits allow you to do sooo many mods. It really makes building one a blast !!! Do a search here on RCU & you'll find a never-ending supply of ideas. Good Luck !!

I agree with outdoorhunting, the 4 Star series are great first low wing kits. Stock or modded they are a must have in my hanger.

I thought people were reporting some bad tendancies on the astro hog, or am I mistaken? (easy tip stalls on slow banked turns).

If it's your first low wing I would highly suggest the 4* series. I haven't flown one, but just from reading a lot about them and seeing them fly they are usually the "go-to" plane for a first low wing for most people as a kit.

The US will likely groove and fly faster/more aerobatic, but I'm not sure if most would recommend it for a first low wing. Tough to say, but if you're a good pilot and have quick correct reactions and fly at 1/2 throttle for the first while you should be okay.

My first choice would be the GP Ultra Sport. I built the 40 size 20 years ago and am still flying it. It is a strong, durable plane that goes right where you point it.

go to tower and get the tower kaos 40 .its stable aerobatic and inexpensive.also consider the "Easysport 40" by greatplanes .essentially a midwing but again aerobatic but forgiving and last as always you can get the sig 4-40..

Ultra Sport 40 or 60.......arguably the best sport plane ever kitted.

If there are bad tendencies being reported on the Hog, then somebody didn't build it right. I've had two, and they were as forviving as it gets. Wore the first one out and still enjoying the second. That being said, the 4*'s are great first low wing planes too. Name your own poison on
which one you like the best, but I like 'em both.

Another nice plane would be the Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk if you can find one. It's an Oldie but Goodie. Great flying low wing with aerobatic ability yet slow landings.

I would reccomend the Top Flite Contender, it was MY 1st low winger. It's thick airfoil, one piece, no dihedral wing is easy to build, and can slow to a walk to land. It was , also, my plane to take to an unknown flying field, you could land that muther anywhere.

I don't blame ya! lol. I'm a new guy myself. Ive been flying for only 6 months but I read alot here on RCU. I went from a Kadet L-T40 to a kit build Four Star 60 just recently. The 4 stars are a great second plane. If you turn it down they can allmost be as forgiving as a high wing trainer. Turn the wick up and it can be a handfull for a new guy. I like my 4*60 so much that I am building a 4*40 and should be done with it very soon. Then I'm thinking about building the 120 I like the 4 Stars so much.

It's hard to explain how the 4*s work to someone new. They are a very "Neutral" plane. They go where you point them, and will self recover if you get lost.

All great suggestions. The Super Sporster and Ultra Sport are excellent. The US might be a bit much for a first low wing plane, though. Also, don't forget the Goldber Tiger series!!!

You asked for something that will fly "on rails and can fly aero". Well, what if ya raise the wing a bit? My 1st and 3rd builds were 4Star60s and my 2nd and 4th were SIG Somethin' Extra's (mid wing). On rails? 4Star - not so much. Somethin' Extra - oh yea!!!

The SSE (SIG Somethin' Extra) is a very popular 40-sized kit - easy to build great fun to fly. Check out the threads - there's plenty of them.

If you are wanting something that is a very stable platform, super easy to build and looks good on the ground or in the air, then might I suggest the Hanger 9 Pulse 60.
I was the first person to get this plane when it first came into the LHS, I took it home and in about 6 or 7 hrs it was ready to head to the field. I used an Os 91 Fx that I had laying around, and it turned out to be a great combination.
I have over 200 flights on this plane and no matter what else I take to the field, this plane always goes with me.

Gotta admit that I'd jump on a Pulse XT kit without hesitating. Friends fly both the 40 and 60 sizes and they can't say enough good things about 'em.

Shame that sites like Hobby Horse sell Hangar 9 Pulse XT "kits". Only they ain't kits - they're ARFs - geez - they need ta read their

Hey guys , the key word here is KIT. He is looking for a kit , not an ARF. lol But the ARF suggestions are good one,s. I would also buy a Pulse if it was a kit. , they fly nice.
If this is your first Low wing and first kit, I recoomend a Sig 4 Star , They fall together, are very strong and can be easily modded . It well fly on a wide range of engines and props . It is also easy to cover and repair.The only thing I do not care for is the way they float on landings. My old 4* .40 weighs over 6 1/2 lbs. and still likes to balloon on landings. But once you get the hang of it , you can do some really nice 3 point landings
The other kits mentioned are good kits also.but I don,t think they build as fast. the 4 Star..
