Ultrsport 60 and Retracts
I have a question- but first, an explanation for this post.
I am ready to install my retracts. I have two gears to choose from. I am stuck. I have pnuematic retracts which I know are not the best choice, but it is what I have and do not have extra money in the building budget to purchase mechanicals, so I wish to use what I have. Has anyone else installed pneumatics in their Ultrasport and can I see how you mounted the tank? I have Robart 605's and offset Century Jets (originaly meant for my TF P-51B). Would the CJ's be to gawdy and bulky for this airplane? As for the tank, I would mount it behind the wing opening. |

Every one has their own opinion on retraacts especially mechanical vs. pneumatic. Personally I prefer the mechanical. Cost is considerably less plus don't have to mess with installing the air tank, control valve, servo and air lines running all over the place. Plus don't have to air upto fly, just plug in and go. Mechanical including servo about $50 total as opposed to pneumatic (air) at upwards of $200. I have mechanicals in my us which work just fine, even on grass field. I have a Kaos and Curare with airs which are a pain, espceially when the air leaks off while in the air.

I'm going to be starting my first kit build in the next couple nights, and would like to see what you recommend for tail dragger retracts on the US 60? I need some sturdy ones that wont bend on a bumpy grass runway! I fly from a somewhat uneven grass field. It hasn't been rolled in years, if ever. It's not bad, but I've seen it eat cheap mechanical retracts for lunch. Who wants to dink around with bending wires each flying session? I've got a pair of Lado retracts that will go into a US60 when I get around to building it. The Lados are a work of art!

A bumpy grass runway is not so hard on retracts as it is on the wire gear.
I ususally use 3/16" wire but it will still get bent up after a few flights. If you really want sturdy gear, I really like the Robarts struts, but they are not cheap |

I'll second the 3dx retracts. I've got them in my US 60, with 3/16" struts and they work great. I haven't been able to locate them on the 3dx website lately and I also thought they might have quit making them. I'll follow the link above and see if I've just not been looking in the right place.

I'am also building a US60. The Hanger 9 Retact Gear you found will fit nicely in the wing. The JR Sport retact servo RT88 is about $25 here in the great white north. The retacts seem well designed, and the spring load struts with trailing link are heavey duty, so for about $70 a wing I should have a nice retact setup. Just make sure you follow MinnFlyers suggestion & move the retacts out one bay. Heres a couple of picks of my trail retact setup. :) |

You are most likely correct oh ....... Ultra Sport master :D. These reacts are out of the new Hanger 9, Blue Nose P51, the servos are designed to mount directly to the extended part of the retact frame, making the linkage exteremly short. So in conclusion if I'm reading all the replies correctly, you're all basically saying that both the 3DX retracts and the H9 are about equal in terms of durability and would work well with the US 60 1 bay out? Only downside to the H9 is the use of 2 servos correct? So I'll need to order 3/16 wire struts to go with the H9 retracts correct, but not the 3DX? Robart 3/16 are the best for this? What length strut do I order? What size are the 3DX struts? It doesn't say on the site. I'm new to this whole retract business! |

Now, you CAN use Robart Struts on mine (I did it on my last Ultra Sport) but they cost 40 bucks each, so you'll pay $60 for the units and $80 for the struts ($140) plus a retract servo ($ 28 - $50). Going with the RT88 servo, you've got $168 The H-9 retracts are $94. It LOOKS like they come with struts (which would be really cool). If that is the case, you'd have the price of the units, plus 2 servos for a total of $150. The only down side to the H-9 units are that you will need to create a door to cover the servos with |

Minn, I just confirmed with Sled (thanks Sled!) that they do include the spring struts, all mounting hardware, etc. Everything you need other than the 2.5" wheel! Sounds like an excellent buy. I think I'm going to try these out on my build. BTW, Sled your pictures of them in action on the US 60 rock!

Yea, I've used these twice now - On the P-51 Bluenose, and on the H-9 P-47 that I reviewed a few years ago and they are outstanding
