Sig Hog Bipe engine
I have a sig hog bipe. I added more weight by fiberglassing the fuselage, and added some other accesories. Should I use a bigger engine then called for?
Thanks |
RE: Sig Hog Bipe engine
How much more weight did you add? I think the Sig Hog Bipe flying weight is 6.5 - 7.5 lbs. A Saito FA-100 four stroke can handle 7 - 9 lbs. So it would be more than necessary at the normal weight, so a few more ounces would be fine with the FA-100. A Saito FA-125a would make it SCREAM.

A Saito 91 was considered 'normal' for the Hog Bipe. I have a Saito 100 in mine and it works great.

My hog is a real beast at 9lbs 12oz. I've got a Saito 100 installed and it will hover (quite well actually!) and can pull the plane vertical FOREVER! the plane balanced perfectly with the battery in the compartment just under the fuel tank.

Saito 100 and a 15x6 = :D

RE: Sig Hog Bipe engine
Mine is a bit heavy but has more than enough power with a Saito 91.

Is using the bigger engine gonna affect balance problems with putting my radio stuff in the same place under the fuel tank do ya think?
Thanks |

RE: Sig Hog Bipe engine
The Saito 91 and 100 is a very light engine for it's size. Balancing should not be an issue.

LargeScale88, don't waste your time on a Saito 100 for a 9 lbs plane unless you intend to run high nitro. If you are going to fly circuits or mild sport it will probably pull it but in time you will be let down. If there is no shortage of cash go with a Saito 125, the extra weight is minimal and you will still be able to balance, in fact if you have glassed that fuselage then you will have definitely added weight and it will work out. If you want to save a buck use an os 120ax. I'm running a 120ax with a MA 16-8 on 15% nitro in my Golberg Ultimate and the power is fantastic! She weights 9.5lbs and is a ballistic missile, crazy vertical. On my 5th tank of gas I was able to do a 10 foot roll out and go straight up like a rocket. Awesome power at a little more than half the cost of a Saito... and I don't need high nitro to get awesome power! |
RE: Sig Hog Bipe engine
I have a Saito 100 in a Hog and I generally use 15% nitro. Mine is on the heavy side of the weight listed on the plans - I forget now what the weight is. I have plenty of power for sport flying - more than enough really. I think a Saito 82 would be a satisfactory choice at my weight for sport.
But mine certainly does not hover. Not near enough rudder and it tends to snap out of a vertical violently as airspeed slows. May be something to do with my CG or wing incidence. The 100 might be enough to hold a hover at full throttle if my Hog's aerodynamics were right. |

When I lived in Calif. the .91 OS FS was the number one engine in the Hog. Here in NV {my area of it} Saito is the #1 four stroke. Short of 3-D flying, something the Hog is not designed for anyway, most any good .91 or 100 is plenty. Very nice sport bipe!!

If you want to fly on your wings...just try a K&B .61. I've one and for years have flown a Hog Biplane with a C.Lee K&B .61 w/perry carb. Great match up and bullet proof.

RE: Sig Hog Bipe engine
Hello,
Thanks for the replies. Sadly, the hog is gone now from radio. I do have a new kit coming, I have an os 65LA, os 91 surpass II w/pump, and super tigre 75 sitting on the bench. Whats the best choice out of them? I was thinking the os91. I'm not gonna fiberglass this one, as the weight came in when it was extremely tail heavy. Hopefully, the new one won't come out heavy. |
