.40 cub

Would a .40 cub be a good first kit?

RE: .40 cub

NO! The cub is unforgiving... if you modified the wing with more dihedral it would be ok, but i would say no. Get a trainer and this would be a good second plane.

sorry, I didn't mean as my first plane, I've been flying for a few years. I just haven't built any kits yet and want to try.

It's not the best, but if you want a Cub, there are far worse kits to build.

Personally, I think the Goldberg Anniversary Cub is not a bad build and with the clipped wing it's one of my all-time favorite fliers.

Where can you get Goldberg planes now?

Where can you get Goldberg planes now? Also, are the parts already cut out?

Order the Sig 1/5 Cub Kit! It is laser cut and goes together easily. I have built many planes and can honestly say the Sig kit was one of the best. Here is a link to the thread I started about my Cub.

I built the sig 1/6 scale kit as my first kit. Not a good move. Instructions were poor but I was lucky that I had a colleague (and RCU) to help. I would not recommend it as a frst kit - but I feel that I can build anything now:D

Goldberg anniversary or Sig 1/5 would both be good choices, we have one of each at our club.

What company sells Sig planes? Do you have to buy directly from Sig?

RCKen 02-21-2010 02:30 PM

RE: .40 cub

Right now Tower is not carrying Sig products. You can order directly from Sig, or Advantage Hobby who also carry Sig products.

Thanks. You said "Right now", do you think tower is gonna start selling Sig products again?

I built my first kit last year, a GP 40 Piper Cub. What a joy to build and fly. It went together fairly fast and taught me a lot of great techniques that I am now using on a TF P-47. I say go for it. You can go to Towers website and thumb through the manuel as well[sm=49_49.gif]

When I got back into the hobby 3 years ago, I built
a GP Cub. It was my first kit since the mid 80's.
It was enjoyable except for the MK covering (JMO)

I have built the Great Planes Cub and a couple of the Carl Goldberg Cubs. Both are good builds, but like Minn, I really enjoy the Goldberg better. Just follow the instructions to the letter and you should be just fine. Good Luck, Dave

I have a Goldberg in the box, what makes it better in your opinion? I was thinking of building a clipped wing out of it.

I built a .40 GP cub 15 years ago that i crashed 2 weeks ago and it was great to build. It held up very well to the crash as well. It is a clipped wing with a O.S. 61 fx, too much power for the plane but in a way taught me a lot about control and helped with basic acrobatics.

I found the GP cub the easier build but I like the CG plane better, it's just a stronger wing. Any of them are a good build and fly about the same. Laser cutting is a good thing too. Can't go wrong with any of them.

I have never met a Cub I didn't like - here's two of mine, one's slightly modified - and one I got in and flew
