Join the Brotherhood
I'll join the Brotherhood! Looks like #153 shall be my number.
Been gone from the hobby for a while but I've missed it allot. I've got a Great Planes Ultra Sport 60 in the mail and I'll be running the OS 75AX. Retracts is a must since I've never had any before. Looks like I've got some reading of posts to do before I start. Wish Great Planes would bring back the US1000, I would love to have that one too. JP Ultra Sport Brotherhood #153 |
Quote from RCKen in post #1 "We ask that all proudly display their Ultra Sport Brotherhood # in their signature lines. Let's all tell the world about this great plane and bring more into the brotherhood!!!"

I could not pass up this perfect day to go flying in the middle of the week. Took the Das Ultra Sport out for it's maiden flight. As expected it flew without any trim needed. Awsome with the 55 AX. A few pictures to mark the event. Love that red on blue.
|
Very nice pictures. I may have to try your scheme on mine or a variation of it, looks so good in the air.
|
Very nice pictures indeed, you must have the shutter speed real high to get pictures of the plane, the prop, you, the trees, and everything else without any of those things in a blur, gotta tell all of us what camera and the camera settings because I want one of those cameras.
|
The red really does look good against the blue sky but as you would expect, it kind of disappears against the trees at a distance. The pictures were taken by my flying buddy Mooten, not sure what his camara is (Nikon I think) but I know he has it set on the "sport" setting. I know that it makes my little Kodak Easyshare look like a toy.

Hi All,
I have just purchased the Great Planes P-51 40 kit I noticed on the GP website that the P-51 uses the Ultra sports symmetrical airfoil. Dose anyone have both planes and how do they compare in flight. |
Yes the GP Mustang wing uses the same ribs as the Ultra Sport 40 wing, well almost except the few of the root ribs to give the wing the mustang wing look, and the two kits builds just about the same both the US 40 is fast and nimble and the Mustang is fast and nimble so they are really close its just that you have a Ultra Sport on one hand or you have a Mustang on the other hand both are great flying planes just follow the build to the letter of the book and you wont go wrong. In my preference DO NOT USE SPRAY FOAM IN THE WHEEL WELLS if you wish to go with retracts there is no need honestly for the spray foam. If you build the retracts and as you are cutting away the wood sheeting and ribs for the retracts yeah you will end up with all that area in and around the ribs, what you do then is to get you a cereal box and make the wheel well openings with the cereal box. The cereal box is card board and sandable and covering sticks to the card board cereal box and CA glue sticks to the cereal card board box. If you need pictures of what im referencing to let me know and ill be happy to upload of what im talking about. Good luck on your Mustang and post pictures as you go and the final product. There is also a P-51 Mustang brotherhood thread.

I dropped away from flying RC for a bit going to start on mine this year I hope. Glad to see the brotherhood idea has grown. Happy to see the ultrasports still out there.

pretty little airplane there scully

Thanks, been flying pattern planes since I was a kid. My father built all my planes. This is the first plane I ever built. Lots of mistakes but she really flies nice. I just ordered me another US60 kit. I really want to build it as a trike with retracts. Does anybody have any thoughts??
|
I'll play... built my US .60 back in the mid 90s. Put an older OS .90 4-stroke in it. The colors were hard to photograph - base neon yellow monokote, the trim is red (might have been maroon or something), neon red, neon green, black, even a tiny bit of blue and pink.

Very cool!! Nice looking US... I would still like to have some input on the US60 trike with retracts idea

Thanks for the advice. You know anything about the bridi aero commander?
|
I personally would skip the retracts . I E Flight Retracts in mine and they add a lot of weight and are nothing but trouble . You are constantly messing with them . I Keep thinking about building another wing with no retracts and mounting a Du Bro super strength gear just in front of the wing .
|
I agree with bikerbc.
|
I'm definitely not scrapping the retracts. Sure they might be a pain but the plane looks so much better flying wide open upside down 5ft off the ground with gear up...:)
|
Scully I think the nose of the Ultra Sport is to small for retracts. You need to get your fuel tank in there too and I don't see there being enough room .. You may be able to bash the kit ,deepen the fuse in the nose area so as to make room under the tank . But as I say I think the Plane flys so well built according to plans that I would leave it as is . The retracts are nothing but trouble . I my opinion .. I would save the retracts for something scale . Oh and just a tip .. I found that Pringles potato chip tubes are the perfect size for wheel wells ..
|
Thanks for the tip. I guess I can always stick with the tail dragger for retracts. Just thought it would be a cool looking modification to have the trike with retracts. I'm in the early stages of a bridi aero commander build. I sure wish I could see some pics of the aileron and engine torque rods installed

So can I get a brotherhood number?
