Hey Guys,

sorry for being away for some time.
It is great to look at this forum to get so useful inputs. Finally i have attached a force .12 car engine to my old LMH 100+ and did a test last weekend. the engine did start and roared but the heli wont lift although it does spin at quite high head speed. things need to done/ tried out:

(1) change the current 4 degree blade holder to 6 degrees as i think the engine is powerful enough but not fast enough
(2) fine tune the engine to get higher head speed. also it is not very smooth at the moment and died out suddenly sometime

by the way, i followed some friends here to use a steel cable in a plastic sleeve and it is indeed very smooth for the throttle
for mounting, i custom made an engine mount to the particular engine by using a piece of wood ( i know, this is basic level but considering the equipments i have, this is best i could do ) . it however turned out great as i can keep the original pull start, clutch etc , and even didn't have to extend the lmh original main gear shaft.

one other thing, i re-watched the video that Peter sent to me and realized that the 4 degree experiments were running at a much higher pitch, so i hope the 6 degree blades will do some good for my upcoming experiments. i will definitely keep u guys posted ( but bear in mind it is winter and cold over here in UK, might delays some test flights). meanwhile, any inputs/thoughts will be very much appreciated.

cheers guys

Lawrence

Finally...

Well done !
It looks like a winner !

If I remember it correct, notasme who made the one in the movie did use both 4 & 6 dotted grips.
He was also using a alu. crutch so it shouldn't be a weight issue either.
What's your gear ratio? maybe you could try fewer teeth on the engine ?

Thanks for the encouragements!
and good point on the pinion teeth, i will look into this and see what is the 6 dots testing scheduled this weekend.
will keep you guys posted.

I think I have found a possible substitute for the Norvel. It's another car engine, but looks like it will fit in with a little work. It's the Sportwerks .05 that comes in a car called the Chaos. The motor runs right about $100 and has a pull start. [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=SWK4200]Sportwerks .05[/link]

Timmy,
I don't think that engine will hack it, considering the Vmax .06 engine which comes with the LHM 116 barely does its job.
If you want something smaller than .12 and .15 engines you could have a look at Kyosho, their 1:16 cars have a Sirio .09 engine but it doesn't have a pull start.
Or you could have a look at HSP and their 1:16 cars they have a 1.1 engine with pullstart.

Put on a pull start and that would be a winner !
It sure looks nice, and I just love how they have put the mounting holes as well.

Well, Lawrence got me hooked.
Im going to attach a .11 kyosho car engine with a team associates clutchbell to my old LMH 116.
I figured, what better heli can my 13 year old nephew start to fly and make hard landings with than a LMH.
These things will differ from the original setup
.11 car engine.
5mm mainshaft.
Belt driven tail.
Gy401 gyro.
CF Tailboom
Don't know what servos I'm going to use.

I went out last night to my little hobbyshack and started to assemble the heli, and found out that the only things I was missing was
some ballinks, the wire that runs in the subrotor and the follower arm, I have to make a new one since the original is on my Extreme V2 rotorhead.

Going to try and place the engine in front of the firewall and the servos behind. Hope to get a better CG.
I'll try to keep you posted with some pics of this build.

The project goes on.
Here's the crutch, I'm not even going to try to put the engine in front of the FW. If the CG is totaly off, I'll make a different crutch out of 5mm ply.
Location of the engine will be at the same place as Lawrence put his.

I'm going to put the engine in a teststand so that I know its working and to tune it so it starts easily.
more pics to come

Quick update.

I mounted the engine.
Thinking of (borrowing) the tailboom with tailrotor from my other heli, this way I'll get quicker into the air..

This crutch have seen better days, I got to do something about it...

Some progress... despite the whole family (me, wife and two kids) first got a really bad cold and the week after we all got the flue as well, ain't life great
Well back to subject...

I got the motor to run, started almost right away.
Servos and tail mounted, I decided to borrow the whole tail from my other heli.
I also repainted it.
I can't seem to find a CF-boom with the same dimension here.. have to order one from US. Once I have that I'll make a new elevated tail using original tailgearbox, still with beltdrive.
What's left to do now is mount gyro(matter of decide where to put it),battery,RX and attach the throttle wire to the servo.

Hey Lawrence,
How's it going ? have you managed to get it flying yet or have you been swamped with your other projects ?

Hi Peter,

Hope your family is recovered from the cold+ flu soon.

well, well done on the lmh+car engine. looks like it is going to fly well!

i tried it out on the lmh but the engine wasn't that great, keep stopping when i throttled high. i played with the needle setting but no good result.

i made a wooden engine stand to put the engine on to test without the heli and the same thing happened. i suspect it is a losing power engine as i get it second hand. i am looking forward to getting a new engine, perhaps.

pls keep us posted. if ur heli flies well on ur .11 i might want to get a new .11 or .12 .

Yea, we'll see if it flies with that engine or not.. if it does'nt I'll order a LEO .12 engine costs around $100 with muffler..

Hi Peter,

How is it going? havent get any updates from you about your lmh with kyosho .11 engine.
I have tested and adjusted the engine (the .12) on an engine mount and remounted back to the heli. testing yesterday show that the engine is running fine and the heli is 'just' about to lift. i can see it is really light on the skid!! i checked the engine clutch and it is a 15 teeth at the moment, sicne i was using the 6 dods blade grip already, i think the next thing i am going to try is to increase the speed of the head by increasing the clutch gear to above 15 T.

i am ordering from tower hobbies and it will take a while to arrive in UK. but i will keep you guys posted.

meanwhile, any other folks here have had some interesting experiments?

cheers

whooa, Lawrence.

My heli was ready to go when I noticed that my on/off switch on the RX was glitching. I'm glad that I found out before I got the heli 6ft up in the air.
All I really have to do is put on a new on/off switch which I already have... soo Im out of excuses .. will try it this week.
I hope the new clutch does the job for you, otherwise there is always .21 engines

Hi Peter,

thanks for keeping us posted about your progress, cant wait to hear about your test flight this week!
yes, hopefully the higher tooth clutch pinion will do the job when they arrive from Tower Hobbies.

As far as i can see, more lift generated from either
(1) higher head speed, or
(2) longer blades with current head speed

will hopefully lift the heli into air.
but as for (2), i saw the 13 blade cost $9.99 each on shopatron, but the shipping is ridiculous, stating $30 for international shipping, which made me hold back on (2).

Anyway, do u know any other dealer which charges less shipping to UK? please let me know or maybe u can help me if you can get it locally?

Cheers

Hey Lawrence,
One question, shouldn't you go with 14T CB if you want higher headspeed ? I read that NotAsMe did use 15T and he did want a 14T bell.

What blades are you using 116 or 120 ?
The thing is I have a pretty good situation here, I have a sister living in US which act as my supplier .
I send the orders to her and she sends them to me here in Sweden, most of the cases I also beat the customs as well .

Hi Peter,

thanks for the note, i double checked the teeth ratio thing. The logic i use is like this:

the main gear has 103 teeth,
(1)for the 15 T, the gear ratio is 6.87 (103/15=6.87), i.e. the engine need to turn 6.87 times for the head ( attached to the main gear) to turn 1 time.
(2)for the 18 T say, the gear ratio is 5.72, i.e. the engine turn 5.72 times for the head to turn 1 round.

therefore, if my engine top speed is 18,000 RPM, i will get
(1) 18,000/6.87=2620 RPM head speed
(2)18,000/5.72=3147 RPM head speed

that's why i choose to go for higher clutch tooth instead of lower. please let me know what you think?

and the blade i am using is the old 100+ blades, which i think is the old 10 inch blade. Peter, by any chance you will be order with your sister's help again? is it possible for mi to add one or two order with you and you can send to me in UK? of course i will pay all postage incurred.
yes, many times the custom charges me a lot because it is directly from the company.

cheers

Hey All,

I have installed an OS MAX CZ-H .15 into my lmh after realizing that the old force .12 is not powerful enough. test flights last two days showed extremely good results. However, i have to use relatively higher nitro content to boost the engine. i am currently running at 30% and keeping it rich to avoid short engine life!

i am using the longer blade and boom, tried both 4dots and 6 dots (4 and 6 degree pitches) , results are:

(1) 4dots- very stable due to higher head speed
(2) 6 dots- more lift but slower response due to bigger drag

i try to reduce as much weight but remained using standard servos for the throttle and rudder control, with two other micro servos for the cyclic controls. it has 4 AAA receiver battery box and also a piezo gyro with micro 4 channel receiver. also the clutch is 15 tooth and i borrowed the pull start from the force .12 to go into OS, it fitted well there

previously i used a micro servo for the tail boom mount rudder control but the results is not good at all. i think it is worth adding some weight but keep the tail straight!

ok, i will keep you posted on any updates. will also try to get a video to show.

Thanks Peter for all the support!

Cheers

Lawrence,

Good to hear that the fullsize servo on the tail solved your tailproblem !

Hi Peter and All,

I have had some good test flights with the lmh powered by .15 OS max CZ-H engine. it flown really well !
I managed to get some video on both 4 dots and 6 dots blade grip but not sure if i can upload the video here, do you have any idea how to upload video here?

unfortunately i found out that the new long blades (yes, both of them) just cracked at the root where they are attached to the blade grip. []i am not sure if this is what other pilots seen on the new blade. they are much fragile than the older short version. and it was lucky that i discovered that before a flight, if not it must have been thrown out at high speed! also this crack occurred overnight which i discovered after next day morning. maybe corrosion by the nitro fuel? but i am sure i wipe it clean after each flights!

i hence have no choice but to put on the older shorter blades but keep the longer tail boom. it still fly very well on 6 dots but i really like to know why the new pair of blades just cracked and broken at the root. also, if you are using the new blades, please do double check it before each flight!

ok, any inputs are highly appreciated!

Hi bro, i'm going for a lmh 117. I'm doing a trade, and giving away my blade 400 for that but not receiver and transmiter. Anyways parts would sucks to buy over the net. But hey www.filefront.com will work fine to load up ur vid. Let me know if you do it. Also load up all the lmh videos that you have. I cant find that much of those videos of mini lmh. Anyways post any if you can. Thanks
