My new CL Scale Taube first flight

Ifinally got the weather to cooperate on 3 May for the first test flight. The model has been ready to test fly since 1 Nov,2010. I did keep busy detailing the model. The model is of the 1914 Jeannin Stahtaube in the German Technical Museum in Berlin.
The model is 88 inch WS, 1500 Sq. In. WA and is powered by an OSFS91SII-P engine. The model weighs 9 1/4 Lbs.
Using my U/Tronics Control 4 channelsystem I control the Throttle, Wing Warp and Rudders. The 4th channel is not used. The Scale Wing Warp allows me to level the wings in flight and to doa Wing Wave as an optional maneuver. The Rudder control allows me tocontrol the line tension.

Thanks for the kind words.
It is a dream to fly. Not a single adjustment was needed afterthe flight.
Now if we can get the assembly time at the field down under45 minutes! I am workingon that problem.
There are 90 of the 92 Scale Cables on the model at this time.

It is scheduled to fly at the Brodak Fly-IN in Carmichales, PAon June 17 & 18. Next will be the AMA NATS in Muncie, INJuly 2 & 3.

Outstanding accomplishment Clancy, well done[8D]
I would love if you would post pictures of your control system and how you are using it i.e. is it a conventional two stick 2.4 transmitter with a flight pack in the airplane and are you wearing the Tx on your belt?
The reason I ask is for ten years now I have been using a Bill Young 3 channel handle which sends encoded info over the wires to the airplane. Now this system has been wonderfull it has operational faults. It is time consuming to do up the lines as well as set them up and the wire leads with the plugs from the insulated control lines tend to break off from all this winding and unwinding. It would also be nice to be able to go back to conventional uninsulated lines and a simple handle.
Since I do no AMA controlline rulebook events I intend to set my next Ukie up with an inexpensive 2.4 two stick with this to be operated with my free hand and the tranny hung around my neck sticks facing outward. This is because I fly from a wheel chair and hanging from the waist is not practical.
I would appreciate your thoughts and love to see pics of your setup.

As for the lines I am using nylon jacketed fishing line but Ican recommend using standard flying lines coated with two coats ofwater based Polyurethane.
As for the wires breaking at the connection to the flying lines. I place a one inch piece of 1/4 In. shrink sleeving on the line before making up the end. I use bright brass of silver colored crimp sleeves to make up my flying lines. After crimping the sleeve I strip and tin at least 1/4 inch of the insulated wire that will go to my connector. With the insulated wire laying back along the flying line solder it to the crimp sleeve. Starting 1/4 inch on the insulatedwire fold the insulated wire over and cover the solder jointand crimp sleeve with the 1/4 In. Shrink sleeving and shrink it. This supports and helps protect the solder connection. Except for the original setup of my Single Channel unit all of the controls systemsneed tomaintain polarity of the lines. I personally use 3/32 (Miniature) ear phone jacks and plugs.

Yes indeed I agree with jayseas especially since the gentleman built his own electronic control system.
Thank you Clancy for posting the the pictures it was not clear in the first post that you are using an over the wire system. Thats very cool it is essentially the same as my Bill Young system and the wire connections to the lines are similar. I am going to do my next ship with an over the air 2.4 system though in the interest of simplifying set up for me, probably just use Hitec stuff that I keep for RC.

Just to show how much Wing Warp and Rudder control I have compare these two pictures.
I built my first U/Tronics Control system in 1982 for my CL Scale P-38, See Model Aviation March 1986 page 76. I sold a few systems back then but not many. In 2005 a previous customer asked for another system for a new model. I sold him the last one I had in stock and tried to obtain the parts to build more of my original design but the parts wereno longer being produced. Design time. My first new design was a Single channel unit which I have sold hundreds of. Then I started the design for my Multi Channel system. It is available in 4 to 7 channels. Since 2005 I have shipped units to 26 States and 6 Foreign Countries.

I have been detailing the model to get ready for contests and today I finished all that I am going to do before the Brodak Fly-In. Here are closeup pictures so that you can count the 92 Scale Cales on the model. The last picture was taken by my wife but the camera was in MOVIEmode so it is a frame from the video clip. RATS!!!

First contest at the Brodak Fly-In. Highest static score but a bad carb adjustment caused the engine to die on landing loosing me theThrottle Opton points. Second place is not bad on it's second flight.
