Bud Nosen 1/4 Cub build?
I have just started building the Bud Nosen 1/4 scale Cub I purchased off the RCU market a little while ago. I didn't even think maybe I should attempt a build thread. It would be very slow, being built over the winter (hopefully!), and not very pretty. The wood is very old and a bit delicate, and some pieces are broken, and most of it seems to have been 'shrunk' over time. I would make my own pieces (I already made one for the stab), but I already have a big project on the go, and this is going to be a workhouse, as I will modify it with flaps, a gasser, tundra tires, and it would be a tow plane. I'm going to try and build it with an aluminum wing tube to help prevent any catastrophic strut failures. Anybody interested in following?

I always enjoy following along with 1/4 scale +/- builds.
I have a 1/4 scale Bud Nosen Citabria that I am refurbishing with updated servos and a new paint scheme. I also have a BH J-3 that isn't quite 1/4 scale, but close.
I say go for it!
I'll be watching if you do.

alright, I'll try it. So far I have only started the horizontal and elevator. I'll take a pic after I sand it a bit to smooth it out.

Be sure to take pictures and post them as you go along.
I still haven't flown my Nosen Aeronca....It's ready to maiden....just have to get to the field.....It has been 2 years since I completed it....sat around long enough for the batteries to go dead...I have a friend who is going to check it out again before I maiden....he found a flaw in my attachment of the wing struts. I'll follow your thread.....

I have a Nosen cub that was started by a friend of a friend. I never built a kit before and would benefit greatly from a build thread. please post as many pics and details as you can.

For sure, I will. We are getting below freezing here at night, so my time in the shop will be limited over the winter now as I don't want to turn the heat on until I can actually dedicate some productive time.

And done for tonight. Pictures aren't the best, they are taken with my new Iphone 4S. Not as spectacular photos as I thought, but it is more convenient than taking my SLR out there and getting dust on it. Oh well, the old phone died a couple weeks ago, it was time for a new contract anyway :s. You can see the short leash my 13 month old has on me on the table, too .

Nice job..........don't forget to put plywood in the area where the control horn will go. You might want to cut the ply so it will fill the entire bay. It will provide good strength........just a thought of mine....I do it whenever possible.

Well I pulled down the cub from the attic, the guy who started the build of this plane had no building experience (not that I do) and there is some very sloppy work done. I will try to sand and re-glueall the joints with some thin CA and then post some pics. Yours is looking good Lins. Can you post a pic of the other side of the stab and elevator as well ? Mine has a hardwood dowel on the elevator and would like to see your install to compare. thanks, Keith

Yes, the kit has the plywood for the control horn, it looks like it is supposed to go on the bottom. It does not cover the whole bay, but I will keep that in mind. I have not installed the dowel yet, that might be tonight. You say it goes in from the bottom? I was assuming it went in from the front of the leading edge. It would be nice if I could find instructions for this kit for little details like that. Keith, if you are able to send a pic of yours I would appreciate it, thanks.
Oh, and it is not quite as nice up close .

Go with your thought....Imbed it in the front of the leading edge......that way you can center it and the elevator will move evenly up and down.

The dowel rod is recessed and covered in epoxy, I have no idea if this is the correct way to install it. Im going to try to get in touch with the person who started my plane to see if he has directions or plans. I have some pics, but I dont know how to upload them to the post.

When you want to send a picture go to the bottom of the place where you are writing text....
It says " Click here to upload images and files! "
Click on it.
It will take you to a screen that says Browse in one of the blocks.
Click on it.
Go to your pictures file.
Select the picture you want. Double click.
Click OK.
Wait until the picture loads.
Click OK
Click OK that you are done........and see what you get..............Here goes...........
It worked!!!

I would have put the dowl at the leading edge of the elevator. Then I would have shaped the leading edge of the elevator to match that of the dowl. Just my opinion.....Don't try to change it now....It would (more than likely) weaken the joint....I'm sure it will work fine the way you have done it.

I agree Sebo that sounds like a better idea, I think I will find many things done incorrect in the way this model is built. I will go step by step with Lins and this thread to try to get it fixed and completed. With the advice and pics from you guys, This cub will fly.....
