Default Gray bearded old poop slid to the dark side!

I bought my first new ARF today. I couldn't help myself, it's soooo cute and soooo much fun I just had to have one. I bought the little AeroWorks Extra 260 electric plane. I have been converting 1/2A kits to electric but this little critter flies so nice I just had to have one.
Just so I don't get caught up in this ARF thing too deeply I will build a kit real soon, I have one on hand.
I'm sorry but the Devil Made Me Do It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Gray Beard: Do not be to hard on yourself. The industry, and society is moving away from being involved building anything. The instant gratification decade is here, and hopefully the next one will have some sense of the importance of learning what a skill is. I am 77+, and fortunately have more than enough engines and model kits to keep me busy for years to come. Yes, I have several ARF models which could not be purchased in a kit form. The Hanger 9 F-22 is the latest model purchased. Unfortunately, I did not do a good review of the model, and after purchase it became a lead sled dud with more design problems that would not have happened if the model had been in kit form. In watching a video, it was not difficult to see that the rudder control rod was sticking which made the rudder movement jurking suddenly when correcting a poor landing direction.

Ok, glad you enjoy your planes. I am returning to the 1/2 A models using the small engines. Need one more TT 0.07 engine.

Cheers!!!

Rich

Now that funny Grey Beard. My fleet is about half and half. I do get much more satisfaction out of my kit built planes. But one of my favorites a Sig Rascal 40 is only available in an ARF.

I'm so ashamed, I tried to fight the feeling but did I mention, it's soooooo cute!!!! I will start building the US 1000 real soon so I don't get too involved in these ARF things. I won't even call the assembling building, I promise!!

I think Don Henley took care of that years ago.

I don't mind some ARFs, like aeroworks ARFs, but warbirds, NO!

Get used to buying ARFs now because in 5 or 10 years thats all the choice your gonna have to buy.

Nah - I'll build from plans or draw my own from 3 views.

I can't decide which is the darker side, ARF's or "leckies"! Personally I hate 'em both.

I know how you feel, I recently gave in and got a BnF electric helicopter. The trifecta of sin.

Jason, I have been building from plans for decades. It's my preferred way to build most the time. I enjoy kits but I can olny afford them when I get them at auction or someone gives them to me. My last deal I got several kits and I kept the one I wanted. The GP Ultra Sport 1000 80 inch kit. I'm having some serious back problems at the moment but as soon as I can I will dive into the build. Already have the engine and landing gear for it.
Fact, as long as someone is designing and selling plans kits will never go away, you just have to cut your own.
As long as people keep there old kit plans and make templates we will be keeping a lot of the really great kits/planes alive. We have been doing that for a long time too.
It's going to be people just entering the hobby that will never know the joys of kits and building.
Mkie, I don't hate any of the aspect of the hobby. I am more in my own comfort zone with gas and glow but I have flown with Jet-X and rubber bands and had fun with that too. Hell, just tossing a glider off the third floor of the math building at UCI was a kick. As long as it will fly I'm a happy boy. With electric I do have to ask different people what the hell all those things on the motors box mean, still means nothing to me but I don't care, all my electrics have flown.

Here's hoping we've got one less stubborn flyer who constantly whines about ARFs. There's nothing wrong with them and there's no reason to hate on them. It has nothing to do with instant gratification(I took as long to build my ARF as most people take building a kit) and everything to do with cost and convenience.

Funny in a sad sort of way...

With all the commotion about Gray Beard's ARF... does that mean the thread will have to be moved? [X(]

BM, (did you realize your initials would be that??)
I like your post a lot. It really is in a sad sort of way, hopefully it doesn't get moved. What next? Will Combatpigg join forces with GB and build a giant scale, slow flyer, lekkie, ARF?
If that happens I am headed to the underground bunker because the end is truely near!

VM, LOL never crossed my mind! Maybe that's why my dad used to call me a little s***

I'm glad GB promised he wouldn't say he "built" his new plane....

G.B. it appears that you have undergone a paradigm shift. (Vulcan hand shake addressed here).
